Age barking started

Can any one remember at what age yout BB started barking ?

My Beck is 9 1/2 months and does not bark at people passing out home, nor if someone knocks on the door or delivers mail, which seems strange to me.

A friend of mine bought a central plains type Ovcharka and that was barking at people from the age of six months. Beck actually goes up to strangers and fuss's them, while i dont want him to viscious or anything but i did buy him as a pet/ gaurd dog to protect my family from any possible threats.

I do hope he changes as he grows up. He absolutely loves children, mind you he cant eat a full one.......yet. lol Seriously though he adores children, and if he sees a child even in the distance, he pulls like billyo to get to them how fantastic is that? Any dog that loves kids is worth his wieght in gold i reckon.

He will bark if there is something to bark about. People just passing by is no need for concern to most BB. A person approaching or touching the fence will make them bark. Jade started barking at things around 6 months. But still if someone is just walking by she will just stare at them. But if they go next door or get near the fence she will bark.

Jade like kids too but when one threatened her at the fence she did bark at her and she was very serious about it.

Sounds like you have a very stable dog there congrats on that.
My 3 YO CC Zoey didn't really bark for about 8 or 9 months almost thought she was a mute lol.
I dont have that issue with the pup though, she has been barking since we took her home almost at 10 weeks old.
She is 14 weeks old now and has two barks, one for play and one when she is pissed off.

Thats interesting DMikeM, Beck is exectly the same in respect of staring at people, once he has spotted someone he wont take his eyes off them till they are well past us, but he wont bark.

I was talking to a chap in the strteet the other day when he stopped to give Beck a stroke, he said that bitch's make better gaurd dogs than dogs and thinking about what said reminded me that the best gaurd dog i ever had was a German Sheperd bitch. Makes you wonder if he is right.

I like a dog that will say it all with their eyes, barks can be a last resort warning but when they have the look their is often no need to make a noise at all.
I am not sure about the gender being better or worse. I have seen some videos of male BBs that made me think I would never want to be on the wrong end of one. Often when someone tries to give Jade a pet she will pull her head away and just look at them. I just say she would rather you pet under her head, that way she has a better chance to bite if she needs to. They either comply or change their mind about petting her. She will actually let just about anyone scratch or pet below the ears but only a few above them.

Thanks DMDK, there's hope for my Beck yet then...........hold on there, he has just this minute looked to my door and barked, for the very first time, next doors dog has also barked so maybe he is just starting,.........i hope.

So you have too bitch's, i bet you have problems with stray dogs when they come in to season, or dont you have many stray dogs in your area?

We used to have real problems with strays, but the council appointed a dog warden who picked them up and fined dog owners when they went to claim there dogs back. That actually stopped the poroblem dead, i just hope that due to council cuts they don't stop the warden service.

My intention is to get a BB bitch, i am thinking of getting a 12 month old bitch so that when Beck hits two years old i can mate them, i haven't bread any dogs for some years now, so i might give it a go. I'll see how it goes and if i get the chance of a nice bitch i'll make the final decision then.

My female comes to work with me when she is in season. I also have 2 big male Rott/Chow mixed dogs at home that are neutered that will attack any other dog that goes over my fence. One attacked a male Wolf Hybrid last year when it went over my fence.

Hi DMikeM, is it ok to call you Mike?

As i said Beck does stare at men, but there is a difference between a stare and a glare a stare could just be friendlyness, where as a glare means damn well keep away or else. I was greatly pleased that he was at least monitoring strange's, thats a start maybe?

As i just posted, he has just for the first time ever lookedr to my door and barked, and since next doors dog has barked it could be that he is now starting to bark. Fingers crossed.

IO had him back to the vet today, i got there at opening time \and demanded i see the vet imediately. When i got up this morning i let beck out to do his mess and when he tried he screamed, i have never known a sound like it, i almost cryed for him. As i lead him down the path to the car, he trioed to defecate again and again he screamed, its a sound i never want to here again.

They took him straight in, i had to sign a form agreeing to various things, the vet phoned me about an hour later and told me they were just taking him it to theator and that he had defecated there with out him making a noise at all, strange???? I went and picked him up late this afternoon, the vet told me there was nothing wrong with him that they could see. They could only guess that the stitches they put in must have caused the problem, which again seems strange to me. So asked me if i wanted them to take out the stitch's, i gave them permission and he is defecating ok now, not even a whimper, so it looks as though the stitch's were the problem. I am wondering if they had stitched him wrong and were covering up for their mistake, either way they charged me another £88 quid, the main thing is that Beck looks ok now, i'll just have to keep my eye on him. because the stitch's should have stayed in till Friday.

So its fingers crossed again.

I'll try and get those photo's of him posted the week end, or to be more accurate, a friend of mine is going to do the photo's for me.

Mike is good.

I am glad to hear he is doing better. I would have given him food that would keep his stool vvery soft while he was healing, nothing worse than passing a hard stool out of a sore spincter. Might as well be trying to give birth.

When Jade started to bark I praised her for correct barks and ignore incorrect ones. I even growled and barked with her to let her know it was good. Right now I can switch her on with one word and she will get a mean look, growl then bark. I love this and will use it next time some fool messes with her while she is in the car.

Beck started barking yesterday when some one knocked on our door, he barked at two different people, but did not bark at ever knock. Its a good start though i reckon and i now have no worries of him becoming and exelent guard dog.
