Advice needed for my crypto boy

Indy, my EM is cryptorchid(turned 2 November 18). I had been planning to have him neutered at the beginning of this month, but am having a hard time making myself schedule the surgery. Last month a friend lost her Saint, on the table. He was a month younger than Indy and also crypto.( Also, a different vet.) I know any surgery carries risk, it was just so shocking and sad the way she lost Max. Also, a little too close to home and has me a lot more anxious than I had been. I'm worried about the more involved surgery and him being under anesthesia longer than a typical neuter. I know the risks of not neutering him, so, don't feel like that's an option under the circumstances. I was hoping for any advice/suggestions that I could ask the vet or do to lessen the risks.
Also, I had been considering gastropexy while he was under, but am now questioning whether it would be worth it since it would be that much longer under anesthesia-opinions?

First thing I would do is ask my vet about the anesthesia protocol he will be using. It is different for the larger deep chested dogs. I no longer have the protocol perhaps someone on here does if not google it. My understanding is that these big dogs need less not more when it comes to anesthesia.

Tacking, I would do it if I was sure my vet knew what he was doing both with the anesthesia and tacking. I have read that vets are doing it wrong. I believe it was Fila4me whose Flower was tacked wrong.

My two cents. Educate yourself on both procedures than make sure your vet knows what he is doing(be bitchy if you have to). Also, I would do the presurgery work up. Some vets require it some don't, with the big dogs I would do it.

Good Luck!

I've lost a dog on the table, it is an awful experience and makes you gun-shy. Just do what AB says above and get comfortable with your vet's knowledge and experience.

Dpenning, I'm so sorry that you know firsthand. I can't imagine how awful that would be to have happen.

My boy Koloff, was cryptorchid. We got him neutered at close to 2 years-rough abdominal surgery as they go looking for the other testicle-his was sitting on his bladder(no wonder he had a small volume bladder. He had 2 incisions and had a awful time bleeding. Wore mommies shorts to catch what we could. After that, he could hold his pee for 8 hours! No more 2 am potty breaks.
I trusted my vet and she knew about the anesthesia thing. Do your homework. From what I know, crypto's have a higher change of testicular cancer if left alone(internal one)

Thank you MusicDeb and Vadersmom! I am definitely trying to educate myself on anesthesia for giant breeds.
I'm sorry Vader had such a rough time. I dread the fact that they will have to search and really hope it won't be difficult to locate!
From your description, I assume Indy's is no where near his bladder! Bladder like a tank since he got potty trained!
Thanks again, I appreciate y'all's help!
