Budkus is now 19 weeks old he is scared in our village when we walk him its a quiet little village only bumping into people occasionally. We take him into the busy town and he is fine full of confidence. He is very unsure in the garden once it gets dark we go outside with him but hes still very unsure and we have to coax him.We don't know whether to keep making him go or are we doing him damage. Will he change as he gets older.Any advice how to handle this will be appreciated.

The first thing I would suggest is to keep doing it. You do not want to reinforce his fears; you want to keep doing it, making it as much as a positive experience for him while you're doing it as possible. Do you take treats, and occasionally reward and encourage him? I would. You don't want to stop doing something that is not harming him just because he is afraid at this age. You want him to be a comfortable confident dog as he matures, so I think you just have to work with him to get him past these episodes. It is not uncommon for them to go through fear stages when they are so young...but it's very important also to remember the he will pick up on your "vibes" and if you are worrying he is going to adopt that attitude also. It's impossible, I think, to know if he will change as he gets older, but I believe if you keep working with him to make him confident in himself he will. Good luck :)

When Denna shows fears of something, I adopt a "challenge" attitude... we have to go investigate it and I let her see what it was that startled her - normally it's a flapping flag or banner that moved when she wasn't expecting. I will approach the object first and touch it, then have her "come see" what it is I'm touching.

I try to express curiosity... "ooooo.... what was that?????" and try to pass that on versus any worry about her being afraid.
So far it's working.

If Budkus is scared of going outside in the dark - first, I'd turn on some lights - then I'd leave him at the door and go running outside and act excited and happy... letting Budkus decide for himself to come join you (don't call his name or ask for a 'come' - just let him explore). Once he's out there, celebrate with him, and let him check it out on his own schedule. After a few repetitions, he should educate himself that there's nothing to worry about - until there's a strange sound or movement... something new to alert and check out - but that's his job as guardian, after all, right?

THANKYOU for some great advice I came home from work last night and did everything you suggested.I couldn't believe the difference I went out running and acting very excited he came running out we played and he loved it.After the 4th time there was a loud noise normally he would have ran in but he stopped playing barked when the noise had stopped he came back to me playing I gave him loads of praise. The only thing is im glad no one could see me how I was acting last night they would have thought I was mad lol but id do anything for my budkus.Il be doing the same every night it certainly gives the cows in the field next door some entertainment lol.

Glad to hear things are getting better. LOL; we all act silly a lot of the time to try and get certain behaviors out of our dogs, and just like you, we hope no one else is watching!!
