Acana for pup

Yea my pup is now 4 months and been on a puppy kibble with chicken and grains(oats) , and she was doing fine on that but I wanted to try something grain free. I knew she did well with chicken, which is why I chose wild prairie.

I raised my Cane Corso/ Mastiff X pup on Acana Pacifica from 8 weeks till 12 months following the feeding amount on the bag according to his weight. He's grown slowly since it isn't puppy food, and I'm concerned that he's under weight. He was 65 pounds at a year old.

I've got him on Orijen 6 Fish now, so hopefully he will start growing.

Do you really think food would make your dog grow noticeably bigger when it reaches adulthood? Im curious about this. I think genetics is the only thing that determines how big the dog will be, obviously besides being toned or fat.

I believe that it has some part. I mean if you have ever seen an adult dog that was malnourished since puppyhood they have quite a series of health problems. Anything from tooth decay, long term organ damage to being smaller and thinner bone structure than say a sibling that was given proper nutrition.

I followed the directions and fed Kevlar the correct amount of food according to his weight as listed on the back of the bag (Acana Pacifica). Why is he only 65 pounds at 12 months? Maybe I should've gone with a puppy food instead. I might've stunted his growth.

I am not saying that it has everything to do with it. Do you know how much his parents both weighed as well as height? Also Lrg/Giant breeds don't finish their weight gain until at least 2 years old. You also have to look at the Breeders dogs and the rate at which they finished maturing. There is also the amount of puppies in the litter.

Really there is A LOT of deciding factors. I wan't saying that you were the reason your puppy is small.

I'm relieved to hear they keep growing till over 2 years. The parents were both over 100 lbs, but only the father was a purebred Cane Corso. One thing I noticed was how much less they recommend feeding your pup when using grain free food.

There's also two schools of thought on this. You can feed based on what the adult food bag says, or you can do what I did and look at the feeding guidelines for the puppy food of the same brand. The puppy food feeding guidelines generally have you feeding more food since the puppy is growing, not staying the same weight and therefore needs more calories than a full grown dog of the same weight.

I can't look up Acana at work because our firewall must think it's porn or something, so I'll use Orijen as an example.

Orijen Six Fish says to feed a 65 lb dog 1.5 to 3.25 cups per day, depending on how active they are.

The Orijen Puppy Food says to feed a 9-14 month old puppy with an anticipated adult weight of somewhere between 85-130 lbs 5 to 5.75 cups a day.

If you take the difference between the mid rang of both of those recommendations you're looking at a three cup per day difference, which with Orijen and Acana is around 1200 calories a day.

The Acana Pacifica is All Stages, not Adult, and I always chose the bigger number for cups per day according to his weight.

I'm just recommending you look up whether Acana has a puppy formula and see how many cups they would recommend for a pup of your age, size and expected full adult size. It probably says five cups a day.

Acana doesnt have puppy food at least not in the grain free range. I feed wild prairie and pacifica since my baby was a pup now she is 17 months doing great on it.

I don't think it matters whether it's All Stage or Adult. You were asking why he was only 65 lbs. I'm sure genetics has a lot to do with it, but I personally would have been feeding him more. Not saying that's right, just what I would have done. Up to 3 months, I would have been feeding around 2.5 cups. Between 3-9 months I would have increased it up to 4.5 to 5.5 cups, then at 9 months would have started feeding 5.5 to 6 cups a day, split into three meals.

If he started looking chubby, I would have cut back on those amounts.

I feed Acana Grasslands(grain free) to Barron and Duke for the last 6 months. Barron is 11 months, 88lbs and 27 inches Tall. He is a Rottweiler/Mastiff(Tosa Inu I think from research) and Duke is 9 years old, 84lbs and approx 22 inches tall Lab. This is what they have been eating.

Duke: We give him 1 cup in the morning which he won't usually touch and than give him 2 cups at night and I am lucky if he eats 1.5 cups. Duke is very Low Energy.

Barron: He gets 2 cups in the morning which he usually finishes and than another 2 cups in the evening which again he usually finshes. Barron I consider a medium Energy.

Hope this helps a little but all dogs are different.

That helps, thanks. I always use heaping cups when I measure, so after double checking it turns out I've really been giving Kevlar about 4 level cups a day. A Cane Corso breeder told me to make sure I kept him skinny while he grows, not to run him till he's a year, and not to neuter him till he's two, so I've been following that.
