Abuse and it's after affects

Has anyone ever heard of any breeds suffering physical affects after the abuse they had to endure is over? I have an album of my Buster on my profile page that shows the abuse he suffered while in a so called Rescue. I posted the following on my Facebook page after reading a post from late 2011.

I was reading on a Mastiff forum about a Boerboel who was 2 1/2 years old and was being beaten and left in a cage for up to 10 hrs a day. This lady went over and took the Boerboel home with her and called Animal Control on the man. She wrote about problems her boy was having throwing up and it's exactly what was happening to Buster for the first 4 months that we had him. Can abuse lead to issues with dogs throwing up after drinking water? Here is what she wrote about when her dog would throw up. We don't know when Buster was neutered, but he was when we got him. Thank goodness Buster hasn't thrown up in a couple of months almost. Below is what I was reading.

I had my boy neutered and since I have brought him home (almost 4 months ago) and we have an issue with him throwing up. Now we thought that we needed to wait more then the two hours we were waiting after meals to let him run and play. Well I have waited so long as 4 hours and he still... runs and throws up. I also notice that anything more then 1/2 cup of cold water makes him throw up. If he drinks too much after he eats, then he throws up so I can only allow him a little after he eats every 5-10 minutes. Then I do that 3 times and stop him for awhile before I allow him to drink anymore.

SO HE THROWS UP 3 HOURS AFTER EATING AND
AFTER HE PLAYS HARD
HE THROWS UP IF HE DRINKS MORE THEN 1/2 CUP AFTER HIS MEALS
HE THROW UP IF WATER IS TOO COLD

If I let him drink what he wants to he would drink 5+ cups each times he makes a pig of himself and wham he throws up so I have to stand over him to stop him ...

Why is he throwing up so much ? Does the neutering have anything to do with it?
I cannot deprive my boy of water but dont know what to do??/See More

Neutering doesn't affect that no. Have you mentioned this to your vet? Its possible he's got esophogus problems. I have no idea if said problems could be caused by abuse.

For Buster when it first started to become a problem we took him to the vet and he said Buster had Guardia (might of spelled that wrong). We seemed to see him have a break from it right after the medication, but then it started back up again. He hasn't had a problem throwing up now though since right before Christmas. I had never heard of any dog throwing up after drinking water like he was doing until reading the one post.

I'm with Ruth, I would suggest having your vet check Buster out. My girl was diagnosed with Megaesophogus a couple of years ago and SOME of what you're saying sounds SIMILAR to Lila's experience.

With a strict feeding routine and Predisone we manage her condition very successfully.

Its worth having your vet check. I'd guess its a less than major case if thats what it is, but its worth checking. Giardia doesn't usually cause vomiting in dogs, though it does in humans. Though its odd that the meds would affect it? So I don't know......

I went through this with Jade (Boerboel) since she was just a baby and I know of a few other SAB owners that have had this problem now. Jade will throw up if she eats kibble then drinks water, 5 minutes or an hour it will come up. Then I switched her to fully raw food and keep her calm before and after feeding. I also added a small jar filled with water to her food bowl to force her to slow down while eating. Before being on raw food Jade would drink about a half gallon or more water per day. Now maybe 2 or 3 cups a day and she will wait sometimes all day and get water from a raised pan I have set aside that only has filtered water in it. The outside bucket has regular tap water in it and I never see her drink from it. She also eats snow for water. I think she does not like the additives in Tap water. She might have had a mild case Mega Esophagus and grew out of it with the raw feeding but she almost never throws up now. In fact I have not seen any sign of throw up in a couple months. I also give her cottage cheese in the mornings to aid in digestion, you might try this as well. One thing I noticed with Jade was after meals she would get up on th ecouch and sit up straight and lean back, I think she learned she could help push the trapped food in the esophagus down like this just like using a bailey chair. Mild cases of Mega Esophagus can go away if treated properly. So it's best to get it resolved while they are young.

This sounds like what my lab went through. The last two years of her life, she could only drink 1/4 of a cup at a time or she would throw up. The vet and all specialists was dumb founded over this. We did barium studies (multiple at different intervals) went to a neurologist, internal specialists etc, but they all said the same thing "No clue" she was diagnosed with Mast cell tumors and Addison's Disease after 6 months of starting the symptoms. She was put on steroids but it did not help with the throwing up, only helped to manage the Addison's. she passed away a little over a year ago when her liver and kidneys started to shut down. It could be mega esophagus, that is what we were hoping it was with Nicki, it would be fairly easy to manage.

DMikeM; I tried hitting reply with quote but this computer is acting up. It's funny you mention how Jade would sit, Buster sits in what sounds like a very simiiar way. Thinking about it, it's been since he started sitting like that he's not throwing up anymore. Since it just all of a sudden one day stopped, that why I thought possibly the abuse could of had an affect on it. I'm attaching a picture of Buster sitting, is this how Jade will sit? Sitting.jpg

Not sure why by my 1 yr old BM (female) has been throwing up after she has been put to bed at nite. I have had issues with her not eating as much as I thought she should and keep food out for her all day as well as water. We have only had her for 3 weeks and she seems to have adjusted very well to us and bonded with me. I have tried several different foods with her and am currently using "Taste of the Wild" in buffalo / vension flavor. As best as I can tell she is eating about 2 to 3 cups (dry) per day. Each morning I find a spot or 2 where she has thrown up her food. She weighs 77 pounds, sleek and with a plenty of engery. Now I'm wondering why she is throwing up.

Mine eat taste of the wild too when I need to suppliment. I wonder if there is something about getting it wet in the stomach that causes upset.

Is she throwing up FOOD, or yellow bile?

She is throwing up undigested food. There was 2 "piles" this morning. Now I getting concerned as I don't know what may be causing this. We started the "Taste of Wild" food recently and she seems to be eating it better than the other foods. I am not seeing / finding any "throw-up" during the daytime - just finding it in the morning. She is seperated from us during the night so I wondering if that could be the issue. Do ya'll feed wet or dry food?

How early in the evening do you feed?
How long between meals is it from dinner to breakfast?
Is there food in the vomit or just bile?

I feed around 7:00PM each day and keep her close until I go to bed, usually at 11:00PM. I feed a 16oz cup of food at night and about 1/2 that in the morning (7:00AM) as she still has food feft in her bowl. Her food is available to her all during the day but I don't see her doing more that sniffing it. During the day she get "treats" as we are working on her training which consists of a couple of dog bisquits but mostly is very small pieces of cut up lunch meat. Since we have had her (3 weeks) we have fed 4 different brands of dog food + some "canned type w/gravy. The foods used are "meat based - grain free". When she eats she does not "gulp" her food or appear to eat too fast. Her water is there for her but I do not think she is getting too much of that. Since she appears to be a well functioning "turd factory" I assume she is getting all the food she wants.

I did notice her eating "barn mix" sweet feed with our horse this morning but mostly they just stood around licking on each other.

In your email you told me you are feeding Nutro. This is NOT a meat based diet. With that said neither is TOTW.
I asked how long between meals Dom dinner to breakfast so meaning she eats at 7p then when does she eat again?
I am assuming 11 hours between. If she is only vomiting in the morning what is it food or bile?

I'd suggest picking up her food, instead of leaving it down. Put it down again mid-day for her to eat the rest if she wants. You might try moistening it with some water (or home-made broth) and see if that makes a difference.

I have a 1 1/2 year old boxer boy, Oliver, that was just diagnosed with Megaesophagus. It's a mild case, luckily, so no bailey chair for him. I think it's important to differentiate between vomit and regurgitation. Oliver was regurgitating. The difference is that regurgitated food shows no signs of being digested, no bile, just piles of food covered with mucus from the esophagus. I grind his kibble in a coffee grinder, add a glop of yummy topper to make it more tasty and water enough to make a mash. He sits with his back in a corner and I fork feed him with his head tipped back. No playing, etc. for about half an hour after eating. He also had a problem with acid reflux late at night and early morning. In just a week he has lost that emaciated look and has kept every bite of food down. His new nickname is The Little Prince.
