Hello, I am a newcomer to this sight. We have a 9 month old French Mastiff. Jaxson, this week twice he has woke us out of a dead sleep with a scream of pain. We rush to him and he seems fine. The breeder said it is growing pains. Why has this not happened before. We do give him meds for his fast growth. Any answers?

Welcome aboard~ What meds for fast growth? Slow and steady growth=healthy mastiff. Fast growth promotes bone and joint issues. Can you post a pic of Jaxson?

Mastiffs continue to grow until 2-3 years of age, giving them fast growth meds is going against nature which is probably causing the pup pain.

Believe he or she is giving him meds for his fast growth, not to promote fast growth.

Any yes they can have growing pains same as children.

Cosequin is not a fast growth meds, it's for joint health. Sounds like normal growing pains. Limit his exercise until the pains stop. You can normally exercise Jaxson 5 minutes for every month of age at every exercise while limiting excessive running, jumping, playing, jogging, etc to reduce injury.

Geez, that cannot be good for any of you to wake up to screaming!! :(

Definitely check his food and make sure it's low in calcium & phosphorus.
The Cosequin should be helpful stuff.
Not sure as to the purpose of the Seacure? It's just a protein supplement? Doesn't he get enough protein in his regular food?

You might also limit his exercise to some calm walks for a bit, see if that helps things settle down.

Be sure you don't react to the screams in a way that might reinforce them... i.e. baby him, invite him to the bed, etc. Be calm and reassuring, but try to stay a little detached so he doesn't think screaming is a good way to get your attention or any other 'rewards'. I know I'm not thinking much if I get awoken in such a manner... mothering instincts kinda take over at that point for me.

Hope things calm down soon!

I experienced this a lot during Kronos' growth spurts. It was due to pano. Even though he was raw fed and growing slow and steady he still had quite a few bouts of pano.
Generally I would cut back a bit on his food(mostly reducing the amount of bone) and give him msm, vitamins C and E. then restrict exercise, more crate rest, and just doggy aspirin as needed.

It's interesting to note most puppies don't get pano as they get older but Kronos had his last bout at 13 months
