6 month old puppy limping

Hi there,

Not sure if its something to worry about or not, my 6month old male DDB started limping slightly on his front leg the other night, i know it was nothing major as i was with him the whole evening, he was playing with my mums boxer so im wondering if he has perhaps over done it, he had a similar problem a couple of months ago but that passed. I've read on internet that giant breeds can get 'puppy limp' which apparently just passes as the dogs body parts grow at different speeds. does anyone have any experience with this or had similar problems?

Yeah, my boy started limping around seven months. It was his front left leg. We took him to the vet after it persisted for a few weeks and they said he had Pano. We got some medicine for it and tried our best to force him to take it easy (no dog park trips). After probably five-six weeks total it finally just disappeared and he's fine now. He's not even limping after we get done at the dog park.

Hopefully it's something similar for boy and it just passes.

Ours is 4 months and he started to get a slight limp to. I thought that my son had over ran him in the basement playing. When actually watching him walk it seems like one area is growing just a slight but more than the others. After 3 days he was normal and playing without a limp. Some times mastiffs do this, when you notice it, make sure to limit there activity for a min of 2 days and have them lay down and take naps al lot. When they sleep they grow at that age! Hope that helps

My dog had this at 5 months. Took him to the vet as it was always the same leg, but there was nothing wrong with him. He had it on and off for a good 3 weeks. Then he seemed to stop limping and it's never returned. Vet chalked it up to either a soft tissue bruise or growing pains. We did limit his activity, he would walk around the house outside, but I wouldn't take him on 30 minute walks like I was doing. He doesn't have any issues from it now, 7 months later, and he is very active and will run with me for miles.

thats great thanks for your replies. Ive given him a few days rest and limited him to just playing in the garden and it seems to be getting a bit better.

How long should i rest him for? Hes had 2 weeks rest it has improved but hes still has a slight limp. Another member suggested 5 or 6 weeks? Is that normal? Feel bad on him not makin the most of the lovely spring weather we have had.

I would say you could let him play his normal play with a least amount of jumping and hard running until his pain stops.

I cannot recommend anything because human tylenol or aleve is harmful to dogs. I used to give my dog (passed away in 2007) regular aspirin (no coating) for his arthritis per the vet. He weighed about 80 lbs and he got one aspirin every 4-6 hours.

Call you vet and find out if they recommend aspirin and how much for your pup?
