5 month old Tinkle Trail

We have a 5 month old male BM who seems to be struggling with potty training. He is going to puppy kindergarten and doing well, sleeps through the night and is a very well socialized dog. However, he has lately taken to leaving trails of pee down the hallway. We take him out every 30 minutes or so to try and make him go outside. He will go a few days and then leave trails for a few days. It seems random. He lives with two cats and another small dog.

Any ideas?

Vet appointment this morning reveals no UTI. No blood in urine. No discoloration of urine. No abnormal sediment. Vet is stumped. Best speculation is perhaps a muscle/developmental issue. Laziness. Maybe being excited wandering into a part of the house he does not generally frequent. He will literally pee and walk down the hall. Not all the time but enough to be aggravating.

Open to all suggestions.

Good to hear no UTI. I would recommend leashing while in the house and reduce the excitement until the issue is resolved. Does he have a crate? If he does, does he use it throughout the day? The crate, if used properly, will be his little room to go to when he wants to sleep or decompress.

Do you notice a pattern when he does it? Right after playing, drinking ...etc?

Also make sure you are using a good enzyme cleaner when you clean it up. Natures Miracle is a god send.

Pattern is not readily discernible. Daughter came home from college yesterday. Thought for sure we would have one......nope. We have been extra, extra diligent in taking him outside and giving him a treat outside when he goes..........he peed so much the other day trying to get treats I thought he was going to be dehydrated.......

Will keep you posted.

I remember a 5 month old golden doing the same thing, when I worked for a breeder. By the time I convinced the idiot owner to take the boy to the vet, the problem cleared up. Maybe it IS just a muscle/control issue. Hope it all works out.

VERY Frustrating..........two days ago. No apparent reason. Just walks down the hall and lets it go. Last night, took him out to go at around 9:45 pm. Gave him treat when he went. Walked into the house turning off lights and turned my back on him in the master bedroom where his crate is located and he lets loose........

mystified ....

And now this evening, after being let out, he decides to raise his leg near his food bowl .......

I just don't get it.

Check out this video with help on getting a pup to go potty outside. He stated that pups will pee/poop 2-3 times before going in. He said owners make the mistake of letting the pup pee/poop once and return to the house and the pup goes in the house.

Thanks musicdeb. We are being extremely mindful of taking him out and treating him. We have also kept him from certain areas in the house. Had a pretty good week, but then he just got excited. Excitement clearly creates the urge.

This is just to update and hopefully "close" this thread. For some unknown reason, knock on wood, Percy just stopped tinkling at about 6 months and a week. i am concluding that this was a "developmental" stage (whatever that means). Maybe he got excited? Maybe he had to "go" because he had not been out? Maybe he was in a new area of the house and got nervous? Who knows what goes on in the mind of a puppy..........
