our 5 month old is eating wellness brand large breed puppy super 5 mix. for the last week or more he has had loose stools, they just get looser as the day goes on. i thought it was the dog snacks my husband got so we stopped giving him those. now i wonder if it might be something or "someone" at the local dog park we take him to on weekends.. anyone have any thoughts on this. I havent called the vet yet, he's still active and isnt really acting sick.

It's possible someone is giving him something that doesn't agree or he may be eating something off of the ground. Try adding white rice to his food to firm his stool, also adding plain yogurt may help.

I started with the Wellness large puppy super5 mix too when I got my pup since I knew from using wellness core with my previous dog that it was an excellent dry dog food. Then I joined this forum and realized how little I knew about giant breed dogs! First, the wellness you are using I believe has chicken in it. Second, no need for large puppy food...you need an all stages food with the right calcium/phosphorus ratio for these dogs. 3. I'm going to turn you over to the experts on this site who will give you much more (and much wiser) info when it comes to this subject. I will just say....I pestered Smart_Family relentlessly until I had all my questions answered regarding this subject, and then slowly transitioned my pup to the Earthborn Holistic Grain Free food. :)

It could be the food. I know with my EM anytime he got a food that was poultry based (chicken, turkey or duck) he had issues. His stool would start out firm and over time it would become progressively softer until he was leaving cow patties. He seems to need to be on a fish based food.

wow. thanks for all the info. i was worried that there was something very wrong with him. i have read what smart family has to say regarding the food. but being a newbie with mastiffs, i thought wellness was the right food for him. thank god we bought a small bag this last time! I did have a feeling that it may be the chicken. ;) shoulda listened to my gut! thanks all for your help! much appreciated.

I've never experienced a problem with chicken in my 5 em boys. I did try wellness puppy on Cruiser and he also had extremely loose stools, something in it did not agree with his stomach, it has a pretty rich base. I switched him to Innova and he was just fine. We, after many trials found that our boy is sensitive to eggs in any form cooked or raw. With all of my boys it took a bit of experimenting with different kibbles to find the right one and they were all different. I kept them on a good puppy food until about 3 months then switched over to an adult feed. Cruiser was the most difficult, we went through 6 different adult feeds before sticking to TOW.
