4health Food Choice

So our new 9 week old EM Blue has for the past two weeks been on 4health grain free beer and potatoes dry food. While he likes it we decided to transition to the large breed version. Best I can tell from the local tractor supply store is the only one in grain free has turkey as the number one ingredient. Is this everyone else's understanding and welcome any other opinions.

Not sure if plays in to food selection, Blue was about 11 pounds 2 ounces two weeks ago, and despite fighting loose stools due to a bug gained a little over a pound that next week. Now after a week of meds he put on another 2.9 pounds and is up to 14 pounds, 15 ounces at 9 weeks. Seems he is adding weight nicely but don't have any experience with mastiffs. His energy and appetite are great.

... Free Beer?? :)

... I think that's supposed to be 'beef'. :)

Such a cutie! Won't be long before he fits that big dish.

Denna (female EM) put on about 0.5lb per day at that age. She topped out at 165lbs, so if you're boy is aiming to get bigger, he might gain even faster. Slow growth is best, but we don't always have control of that sort of thing.

I've heard others here recommend 4Health as a food... so if he's doing well on it, sounds good to me!

I had the same thought about the beer typo. I was like "Wow that sounds yummy. Can I have some?"

Keep an eye if you switch to the large breed turkey one. We discovered the hard way that Diesel's allergy to chicken extends to all poultry. Chicken allergies are common. I don't know how common it is for that to extend to other forms of poultry as well but just keep an eye when you make the switch and you should do fine. :)

Thanks Nik - this might be a dumb question but what form does the allergy come in? Scratching primarily? Thanks

Hey DennasMom - well Dad was 195 and mom closer to 150, so we will see. Am certainly looking for hi to grow and a nice steady pace and let genetics divide the end game.

For the record, there's plenty of beer here but I guard that pretty close!

Kryten (male EM) is unable to have any sort of processed poultry. For him the symptom was loose stool over time eventually becoming diarrhea. Removing all pet products that contain poultry (this meant checking every ingredient in anything I bought him) solved that problem.
It sounds like you are already planning this but you do want to ignore the pace that other puppies grow at and just keep him at a healthy body condition.

So diesel gets loose stools, diarrea and has skin issues if he eats any poultry. Skin issues included red swollen skin on his feet that itched him and he even started developing skin issue on his body (bald spot he would itch at). When we got rid of all poultry the symptoms went away.

With certain brands of food that contain chicken, my girls will get enlarged mammaries. And they aren't going into/out of heat either, one is spayed & the other is a senior citizen that hasn't gone into heat in over a year. So, yeah, I don't feed food with chicken either in my household.

The funny thing is that boiled chicken doesn't bother him... just dog foods that contain any sort of poultry. So maybe it is something in how they process it for our Diesel?

What's really strange is that I have a corn allergy that is similar. Foods that contain corn will give me extremely unpleasant allergy symptoms whereas I can eat pure corn and as long as I limit it to small amounts I am fine. It's actually a rather sad allergy for me... because corn bread is soooo amazing. And I can't touch it.

Same here!! Boiled chicken is OK, no one gets any reactions to it. I think it's how the chicken processed as well.

Make it 3. If the chicken was marketed for humans Kryten can eat it raw or cooked. The only form of poultry he can eat from pet stores is the feet.
