Ok my believed to be a mastiff mix puppy has surprised me. He has lost his 4 canine teeth and one of the others so hes been quite off his food all week. To the point we were getting worried.

However when we weighed him it turns out hes put on over 10lb in a single week. Hes now at 91lb and turns 5 months on Sunday. He is always weighed at the same vets, this time we drove around to a second vets to confirm the weight as we were so surprised...

Here's his weekly weights in KG/LB since weve had him, is this choppy pattern of weight gain normal? He is on a raw diet, so neither calcium levels nor protein levels are extreme.

9 weeks 12.5 / 27.5
10 weeks 16 / 35.2
11 weeks 18 / 39.7
12 weeks 19 / 41.9
13 weeks 21.2 / 46.7
14 weeks 22.8 / 50.2
15 weeks 25 / 55.1
16 weeks 27.5 / 60.6
17 weeks 32.2 / 69.9
18 weeks 34.2 / 75.4
19 weeks 34.8 / 76.7
20 weeks 36.8 / 81.1
21 weeks 41.4 / 91.3

Heres a few photos to show condition, to my eyes at least he seems to narrow in all the right places, ribs are easily palpable with no discernable fat covering...

Max gained about 5 pounds a week until he was nearly a year old. Your pup looks fabulous!

Wow. He looks amazing. I think I said in your other post I had a long-haired Rottweiler; his coat didn't come in fully until he was a year old or so. He started out looking like yours but his full-on adult coat was more like an Aussie. Very fluffy!

I know that they grow in spurts, so it must be possible. I've been averaging out my EM pup's daily growth in between vet visits and it went from .84 lbs per day a few weeks ago on average to (as of this last Friday) .57 lbs per day. But last Friday at 16 weeks and a day, he was 51.8 lbs, so he is smaller than your pup. Mine eats both raw and kibble meals.

Genetics is going to determine overall growth rate and eventual size so I think you are going about it the right way. I look forward to watching yours grow. He is so cool.

91 pounds at 5 months?!? OMG, he's going to be HUGE!!!

And he's so STINKING CUTE!!!! Love that curly hair!! :)

Denna... a girl... and an EM.... gained a pretty steady 0.5lb/day at that age, and was "only" 63lbs at 5 months old. She's 3.5 years old and 155lbs, now - much smaller than her mom, who was 185lbs at 3 yrs.
Her highest weekly average gain was 0.68lb/day; that was at 7 months old.

Thinner is better, but as long as you can still feel ribs easily, he's doing well. The top shows a little tuck at the waist, which is good, too.

Majorly going to say he's EM mix now. 10lbs in a week is not unheard of with them.
There's a couple in old growth threads in the EM section.
Damn that's going to be a big boy at the rate he's going.

My girls are 7 1/2 months and Sage weighed in today at 71.6 and Bella weighted in on the 18th at 63, Sage was 69 on the 18th.

Done a bit of maths and overally since weve had him it comes out averaging 5.3lb per week so not a million miles off.

Thats really good to know, shows that the occaisional 10lb week here and there isnt an issue.

So do you think he's going to be 250-300 lbs full grown?

We arent sure what to expect yet apart from BIG, not planning on letting him get over weight, but am planning on letting him do some weight pulling in the future so should build some significant strength up. This calculator Find Out Your Puppy's Adult Weight | Puppy Chart when choosing english mastiff as a breed suggests 211lb adult weight based on his current weight. No idea how accurate it is. Yesterday we ran into someone at a local park who had a 185lb mastiff and they reckoned he was way bigger than their dog was at that age, and has bigger paws now than their dog does as an adult...

Anyone got any fairly reliable indicators of final height and weight? He is currently 26" at the shoulders and 27ish" heading for 28" at the back end. Im guessing hes going to be well clear of the 30" mark...

After the last post I did a bit more maths just out of curiosity on where things will end up. 5lb per week for the next 31 weeks till hes a year old, would bring him to 246lb at a year old /faint.

In English money that would be a 17.5 stone dog at a year old. That would put him in the "heavier than most adult male humans" category. Thats significantly more than me, Im a very average height and could do with losing some weight...

I know hes big, and we wanted a big dog, the bigger the better, but 17.5 stone (246lb) at a year old is that a realistic possibility? What would be the final weight \ height on a dog that size at a year old?

At the rate he's going 5lbs a week for the next 4 weeks would put him around 111lbs at 6 months which is generally half a EM's total adult weight, which would give you a final weight of 222lbs.

There are always some that break that rule though, EM's have been known to break 300lbs with Zorba being the official largest at 343lbs and 8ft 3in long. There is Cromwell in the UK currently at 312lbs and Moose in the US at 285lb which the scale was not big enough so that is suspect to low for him. Another had a unofficial weight of 365lbs.

So by all means 246lbs is possible, but I would look more toward 180 to 200 at a year.

Ok 222lbs adult weight is reasonable, a shade under 16 stone maximum size. A big dog, but not on the same scale of worrying a 1 year old 17.5 stone (246lb) dog with a couple of years filling out still to go :D.

just looked up a photo of Zorba, impressive weight for a dog that doesnt look overly fat, just plain huge...

He's really a unique and fabulous dog. I can't wait to see how he matures. I've always been partial to Leonbergers and he really does look like there may be some in the mix.
