10 week old French Mastiff pup

Hey guys!

I am new to the forum and new to owning a mastiff. I was hoping some of you could help with my new pup.
He is 10 weeks old and comes from a very good European bloodline. He is only eating about 2 cups of kibble per day ( Orijen Large Breed Puppy) and is 25lbs. He doesn't eat much at a time. Just kinda nibbles morning, mid day, and evening, but gets about 2 cups down total. I was thinking that he would be eating much more than that. Is 2 cups at this age ok and is 25lbs @ 10 weeks avg? Thanks for any advice!!

hi, i have a 16 week female DDB, just a question, how long have you had him?, it was about a week before gypsy started eating propel, she would only tack small a mounts at a time to start with,
as for weight don't be over worried by how much he weighs, his body condition is the most inportent, with the size they get up to as adults you want to keep him on the light side, ideally being able to feel the ribs when stroking him and seeing the last 1-2 ribs when he moves,
i checked gypsy's weight chart at just over 10 weeks she was 15 lb, but that's not to say he is heavy as long as his body condition is good then his weight is fine,
as for weight gain we are looking at around 4 lb a week but some times less some times more, i feed for the adult weight of 60-70kg by the guide on the bag, but the guide on the bag is just a guide monitor his body condition and adjust his food if needed,
i hope that helps, we do love puppy pics on here

Thanks Jenny! I have had him for 2 weeks. I got him at 8 weeks old. Just trying to make sure he is on track and healthy. Being new to the breed I am trying to learn all I can. Here he is at 8 weeks. image.jpg

Are you allowing him to free feed or is he on a schedule? I tried to free feed my EM pup initially & I found the same thing, that she wasn't eating much.

Like Jenny said don't get to caught up with what the scale says, you'll drive yourself crazy. Body condition is most important. You'll also find that he may have awkward growth patterns too.

Congrats on a seriously cute pup! What's his name?

Thank you all so much for the help. I feed him in the morning but he usually doesn't eat it all ( 1 cup) until
Around 10-11, I then give him another meal around 4 (1/2 cup) which he usually doesn't eat it all. I will
Then add another 1/2 cup to what's left around 8 and by 10:30 he has eaten it all. Which turns
Out to be 2 cups total through the day. His name is Matrix :)

I have a very fussy eater with my Irish Setter x, very common problem with the IS. The one trick that I have found to get him to eat is to add a topper to his food. I add between a teaspoon and a tablespoon of wet food to his kibble. I have also used hot water or broth to make a bit of gravy to enhance the smell since I've read that dry kibble tends not to smell appetizing to many dogs.

i just checked the feeding guide he looks to be eating just a bit less than the guide for a 60kg adult weight, do you know if the was free fed eg had food available all the time or given scheduled meals, gypsy was free fed it took her some time to get in to having 3 meals a day, i would give him his food let him have it for 30 minutes then lift it till next meal, he will soon reals he only has food when you put it down and will learn to eat more every time, this worked with gypsy, all dogs metabolism works diffidently don't worry he will eat what he needs.

Adorable pup!

Our DDB, Hagrid, was a picky eater (did not like plain dry kibble). So, we added a bit of scrambled egg to his food. It helped him adjust to his new food. And after two weeks, we phased out the egg as he was used to his dry food.

As long as he is gaining weight or growing well and has good body condition I would not worry too much.

He is out of the Bam-Bam bloodline

I have added some warm water to his food and has made all the difference
He is now eating about 3 1/2 cups instead of 2 a day. Hope he stays eating
This way.

Thanks so much to everyone who responded and you all have a great Christmas!!

That's awesome. My girl Tempyst was a litter-mate sister to Bam Bam. I had her imported from their breeder in Poland. Awesome bloodlines! I lost her in June and miss her a lot. I look forward to seeing pics of your pup as he grows!

He's adorable! My DDB was only around 15 pounds at 10 weeks but she was sickly when we got her. He looks great. Don't get caught up on weight. I did but once she got well we had a 30 pound gain in 5 weeks. They will figure it out. Gorgeous pup! Congrats!

Congrats on the new one! My Dogue's dam was a daughter of Bam Bam. Great line, I agree. :)
