Do you use a prong collar?

When I am taking Roman somewhere new or that he is not used to, I use the prong. I can't control other people so in new situations I want to be certain I can control my dog. Otherwise, he does well on a choke collar with a light snap for correction, if needed.

Thanks everyone for the replys! I appreciate all the opinions! I am quite happy with the way my pups are training, just thinking a prong will possibly needed for walking as Autumn is a puller and kind of nervous and Oliver is nosey lol

I use one with Mario. With it on he walks like a dream - no pulling or lunging and not because I yank on it or over use it ... But last week I took him on a 3 mile walk without it to see how he'd behave. Basically he was fine but kept pulling in front on me- I prefer him to walk directly next to me with the leash slight loose- that wasn't happening with the flat collar. ;) he doesn't yank me around or anything though with or without it.

We started using a prong collar about a month ago. The first week was great. Bailey became a dream to walk particularly since both my husband and son had refused to walk her due to her pulling. I was afraid of falling, so this was a blessing, especially with my age and the worsening weather conditions.

At any rate, everything was fine, then suddenly she became ill. She was drooling uncontrollably....it was just pouring out of her. Her muzzle was so wet, and I was terribly afraid. Then she had diarrhea and whitish loose poops. I took her to the vet and he agreed with members if the Forum that the first place to start was remove the collar. He followed up with a probiotic therapy. Then it was wait and pray. Within three days the uncontrolled drooling had stopped. Her muzzle was dry. Her stomach settled down. Within a week everything was normal.

We don't know the cause, however, we have increased the links in the prong and we are reintroducing it, but, optionally. Was it a pinched nerve? Was the excessive salivation and swallowing upsetting her system? We don't know. She hates the prong, but we are putting it on her and hooking up to her flat collar...If she's out of hand, we can switch to the prong for control. Bailey will learn, it's up to her, pain or pleasure. If she listens and obeys, no prong. She's smart, she'll get the drift and behave on walks.

As long as you consider your dog's health and welfare, and you keep your eyes open for any distress, it is a valuable tool.

I've always used a prong with Hoss, he turns two on Jan. 1st. The choke collar can damage the throat. Even though Hoss is very obedient at 200lbs I always wanted the assurance I could contol him, no matter what.

Denna was trained just with a flat collar, and then with a nylon slip lead... at about 8 months old, I tried the prong on her... just to try it out - it worked great at calming down our previous bulldog mix...

As soon as I put the collar on her - no pressure applied - she FLOPPED to the ground and would. not. move. I could have drug her home using the prong around her neck, she was NOT going to give in to that THING! So... I took it off, put the nylon slip lead back on, and she jumped right up to sit in front of me, and off we went on a nice, calm walk. :)

So... I have nothing against the prong, but I don't use it with Denna. I try to control her using voice and body language only - it's amazing how well she responds that way. I used to use lots of treats training that way, but now she doesn't need them (she's 20 months old). We just enjoy working together.

She started to take off after a bird one day, and I knew she was going to pull me over if she didn't stop... I was able to yell "DENNA, DENNA, DENNA" and she stopped in her tracks and looked back at me to see what was up (I don't ever have to yell like that on a normal walk). Needless to say, she got LOTS of praise for NOT pulling me down the street! :)

Denna's the first dog we did all-positive marker based training with. The concept of luring your dog to do what you want - and not ever touching them to correct them is very new & different for me.... but it's a fun challenge, and I'm really liking how our bond has grown using these methods. And, being trained this way... if you ever DO use physical corrections, man-o-man do they make an impact!!

Yes, we have been using a prong collar with Lola for long walks since she was 8m or so. We did speak to our vet first, did a lot of reading/educating, and I refused to put it on her until i tried it on my thigh first to make sure it wasn't sharp and so I could understand what it would feel like for her. She does wonderfully with it.

Gus will typically wear his 1 1/2" leather collar along with his pinch collar. The several harnesses we used were very easy for him to pull. Decided on the Herm Sprenger Curogan Neck Tech.
I liked that it did not look like a pinch collar but rather a copper colored collar. It almost blends in with his coat. I have had a number of people compliment him on his collar and when they ask what brand it is and I say it is a pinch collar they are shocked. The design is suppose to emulate the teeth of the dog more so then a standard pinch. I did try it like RissyRenee but on my neck. Just a little more correction when he is being a bit stubborn.
