  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

you know you've gone over the edge...

...when you go to the car dealership and explain to the salesperson the first consideration for any vehicle is that two mastiffs have to fit... comfortably.

Really seriously looking at a Nissan Rogue. Wouldn't be able to fit 2 crates, as I can in our van, but I think we can comfortably do seat belt harnesses. I'll tell ya, crossover vehicles are not as roomy on the inside as they might appear. I had a little Audi wagon that I LOVED, but it was nickle and diming me to death... I feel like it almost had more room for dogs in the back than these big cross overs do. Might go look at something similar before deciding.

How do you all transport big dogs?

Check out the new Subaru Outback. Comes standard with roof racks and built in cross bars for cargo up top and longer rear cargo area than most SUVs.

*I* like the crossovers, but I'm thinking another wagon really might suit us better. I haven't looked at a subaru yet, but I do like them. I also really want AWD in addition to room for the dogs, I might go check them out this week.

I originally came to this board because I was looking for car harnesses for my pups. I will do an intro on the main board, but basically I have a 3.5 yo boxer/BM mix at 77 lbs and a 3.5mo EM who is expected to come in at 180 lbs. I recently found out that Xena's current car harness won't hold her in an accident, and I am at a total loss of what to do with Morpheus when he grows up. Even the "best" car harness only is rated to 80lbs. I drive a sedan so crates are out. I love my car, and M not in a position to get a new one just yet....

What do all of you do?

Not over the edge just a responsible mastiff parent! We actually took Angus to CarMax with us to see what he would fit into. Yes got some very strange looks with an EM and his ramp to check out size of cargo areas. So far we haven't found anything that is a good fit except a Land Rover LR4. I refused to do a minivan for our kids when they were growing up and I still refuse for our dogs. :D

I have a Dodge Ram Megacab pickup truck that will easily fit three full grown Mastiffs in the back seat area. It takes days though, for all the drool to dry and then another few hours of detailing to make it look/smell fit enough to transport Humans in again from time to time. I too, took one of my dogs (the nastiest tempered one, LOL) to the dealership when I was truck shopping. She kept the annoying salespeople away long enough for me to walk around and look at all the inventory & check out how well the dog could climb in, etc, then decide I wanted to go for a test drive and see about buying one. I didnt think twice about taking my giant breed dog shopping with me, especially if said dog has to occasionally ride in said vehicle! :)

What's a "wagon"?
Is that like an estate car?

If so volvo audi and VW estates have loads of room in the back. Maybe not enough for crates but if dogs travel uncrated then that's what I would go for (we don't tend to get huge SUVs here so estates are biggest before vans and tractors)
I had a VW estate that also had cargo tethers in the back the same as seat belt catches so a car harness could clip in.

Oh and as a side note I might have used Max as an excuse to test drive an estate car well out of my price range and not what I wanted at all. But let's just say the Insignia VXR will crease tarmac if you even think about the loud pedal. I had fun but cut the test drive short for fear of loosing my license. Far too much fun can be had test driving cars. Haha.

The insignia was close to 25k.
I bought an 8k hatchback. I could see the disappointment in the salesman's face as he watched his commission fly away haha
