can you point me to those videos? I am really interested. S

unfortunatley there are no "efforts" from one side at all... it is $ and nothing else. when they break away from the FCI and start concentrating on working dogs then they will be considered a legitimate source until then their shows demonstrate what they are looking for and that is anything that will bring the Fila to mainstream (touchable, profitable and ultimately no function). you can already see it when you hear of the complaints of judges disqualifying dogs for showing temp...you asked for it when you crossed breeds and demanded that to be the norm. BTW I named some CAFIB and some UNIFILA kennels that have working dogs in current use..... would anyone like to name some other bloodlines still in current use as working lines? (BTW I have pictures and video proof, please be honest and have the same handy...thank you).

I appreciate the back and forth concerning this breed. I would love to own one some day and as far as I'm concerned, the more that's out there, the better knowledge I have to make a choice on what to go with.

That is the key...Knowledge....both good and bad....be open minded and listen to all...don't buy into the hype...the biggest web site or the biggest operation does not mean the best dogs....couple that with visits to see full grown filas in their every day life...if ever at all it does not feel right...run....after that good dogs are where you fiind them...S

I have a feeling we are going to get along lol took the words right out of my mouth, couldn't have said it better. Have you tried attacking the owner instead of the dog, no matter how scared the dog is he or she should always fight to protect the owner. To a well bred fila it's owner is life itself under no circumstance should it ever abandon him or her. The dog should put up a better fight if the owner is involved trained or not, in the end that's what matters. Let me know what you think!

That is correct. that is why at CAFIB shows it gets tested both ways (well depending who is judging) one with the dog handled by owner and one tied up by itself...the tie up part IMO is mostly to check nerve/confidence.

Slim is correct. you can get the worst dog in the world from the best breeder in the world and the best dog in the world from a puppy mill.... of course the chances are always better if you go to someone who knows what they are doing but anything can happen as these are living things and not mass produced robots. look at lionsden "filas"... so many bad reviews however one guy here got one from there and thinks his dog is great... with living things there is never a 100% guarantee on the turn out.

Exactly. I posted about meeting two Baicura filas in the late 80's/early 90's. I wanted one. I tracked one down that made it here to the states. She was sold to the sorriest dog peddler/puppy miller in the history of the dogs, not just the Filas, but the all the dogs. I visited him. I saw the bitch I wanted and she had pups. The pups looked like the two I had met a few years earlier. I took a chance. She turned out to be a great dog, just not a good Fila. She did all the things a working farm dog should do and defended our home and family with a beautiful display. She had a ton of conformational shortcomings. She failed her temperament test. But she caught hogs when exposed to that. She kept the coyotes at bay. She was solid farm dog but was luaghed out of the show ring in that endeavor. She was great dog from a shit head of a breeder.

Make all checks and money orders payable to ........just kidding.. The well bred Fila will defend its home and family. The protection work with the handler will have the Fila amped a little more than the back tie work. I buy into the part about the Fila's owner being the life of the Fila. That is true but only to a point. The majority of Filas will bail when the pressure is applied. A man not in a bite suit could not possibly withstand what the Fila is offering iover that short period of time. And one, that is all we really need, but two, odds are that same Fila will bail if the pressure is high and continual.
The temperament test is just to see if the instinct is there and the base of sound nerves is there. In a perfect world this would make the Fila who passes the temperament test a 'candidate'. Then the work goes into the dogs to improve upon and teach/condition these dogs to handle the higher pressures. This will weed the weaker nerved dogs from the gene pool.
And things get better when these dogs are bred upon. This would be ideal but in reality the very dog that could have completed all the testing and had the soundest of nerve will be passed over if his conformation is not so good in his formative years.
