Oh you sweet Grand Daddy-dog! Heaven help me, but 4x4? Have you looked at your Boerbels lately? Bigger than the average Mastiff...I'd make it 5 x 6 = 30 square feet OR 6 x 6 for 36.

The nesting box that Bailey and her siblings were in for display was a good 6 X 6. Of course, there were 15 of them! OMG!

Leave space so Jade doesn't squish her babies. Mastiffs are ginormous and they have to move around. The smaller the box, the greater the chance of a crushing injury when mommy gets up.

Hugs to you and the mommy. E.

I have a sheet of 3/4 inch particle board so I think I can do a 6'x5' x 2' tall no bottom and have left overs for corner seats, I will also install about a 4 or 6 inch pig rail to protect the pups from mommy roll overs. I'll cut a door into one end that I can open and close.
Check out these, I will be following their plans.

Actually I think I can only do 4 x 6 or 4 x 5. Also if you look at 4 feet it's actually pretty big. Odi and Jade are actually smaller than the average mastiff. She is 24" Tall 125lbs (147 right now) and Odi is 27/28" inches tall and a lean 140Lbs.

The plans look interesting, Mike. I hope it works out for you. It's great your so handy.

When do you expect the puppies? Has the vet been able to give you an idea of how many pups to expect? And I'm curious, is Odi acting differently towards Jade or her to him?

So looking forward to pictures of the puppies.

I used to use something similar when I was raising labs who were were right at 100 lbs. I used sheets of plywood but the long way to keep the 8 ft length and then 2 ft high with a hinged door to let mom in and out. Inside rails were 2 x 4's to keep the pups from getting squished. Bottom was open for easier cleaning once the pups were older. Worked great! Although if the pups are big chewers plyood maynot be good for them. I had one batch of pups that thought is was a wonderful snack!

The vet gave me an estamate of 44/45 days so I have about 2 weeks to get ready. We counted about 9 or 10 pups and one was rather large. Odi does not like to be away from Jade and he protects her and herds her or the other dogs when they are crowded together. This morning he was cleaning her belly and teats, no not suckling he was lust laying with his head on her belly and cleaning her. I wish I had snapped a picture it was pretty sweet. Jade does not seem to act any different to him at all.

My room is not big enough for an 8 footer. I will be pushing it for a 6 or a 5 footer. as this is a storage room with junk still in it. I am trying to find safe space for the junk but I just don't have it.

How long is Jade? She'll be stretched out and panting for much of her labor. Make sure to make a little extra working room in case you need to help her at some point for either reassuring pets or catching and cleaning pups since its her first whelp.

Our whelping boxes at work are made of plastic trellis material & plastic material on the bottom that comes apart for easy cleaning. I'll try to track down the maker. I like them because wood is so absorbent; I don't like the thought of blood, amniotic fluid, or urine soaking into the box.
We use these at work under sheets & towels. They're pretty absorbent, & they don't slip when mom tries to nest. They do a pretty good job of sticking to the floor. I'm not sure of the cost, but they're worth every penny IMO. (In case you didn't know I whelp puppies & take care of the neonates for a living).

Thanks but we had the pups (9th, 10th, 11th and 12th) and I had to build the box on the fly during the whelping. a 4x5 box is huge BTW. I made it with no bottom and set down a plastic tarp then painters paper, then bed sheets for easy cleanup. I used 3/4 inch particle board and used screws so I can take it apart.

She had the pups on day 57/58/59/60 not day 63/64.

Everything that could go wrong with a whelping went wrong. I am still in recovery mode right now. I will post pics soon.

I know this is an old thread/posting, but could you explain what happened here? Or direct me to a thread where you already went into it in detail?
I am really curious here. It sounds as if she was in labor for 4 days straight, I've never heard of such a thing! Thanks in advance!

That's pretty much it. She went into labor at around 10pm that night and started having pups around 10AM the next day. After a couple pups she went into a pause mode and had no pups for almost the whole next day then went back into labor and had 2wo more live pups and 2 still, then went into pause again. The next morning we had one more live and another still born.
