Any suggestions on what to feed my 6 month old Bullmastiff that has possible food allergies? I was looking at my local pet store, and i was looking for puppy food with no chicken, corn or other unwanted ingredients for large breed dogs. I couldnt find one without chicken for large breed for a puppy. Is it ok to start her on adult food? How necessary is it for her to be on dog food for large breeds? The lady at the pet store was trying to be helpful, but really didnt help much at all. Please help me, i want to make sure she has the nutrients she needs. She is nearly 6 months, and weighs 75 lbs. Im not sure about feeding her dog food that is not for large breeds....

I feed Earthborn Holistics Meadow Feast. It is grain free and made with lamb not chicken. It also has the appropriate calcium/phosphorus ratio for a giant breed puppy. They do not need a puppy food. This is rated as an all life stages food.

If you can't pinpoint the allergies, then go for single meat protein varieties.

Adult food is fine.

I'd go for one of the limited ingredient options if you can fine them locally, see if you can narrow down the source of the allergy.

Acana has some good chicken & grain-free options, too.

I'm switching my 16 week puppies to earth born holistic meadow feast and they love it. It's got no chicken.

Her skin cleared up completely, and she is on a salmon, sweet potato, and pumpkin kibble now, also grain free. She was on antibiotics, and unfortunately steroids...since she is off her medicine now she is starting to get the bumps back. Could this be a non food allergy? The vet said its rare for her age to have allergies like this. When she was at the vet, they scraped 2 areas of skin that was broke out, and found no parasites so the vet was thinking food allergies. I was hopeful that we found a solution, but since she is getting bumps everywhere again, im no so sure. Guess its another trip to the vet. Any ideas what could be going on?

Sounds like you are going through the same thing that I am and I wish I had an answer for you. Magnum (Great Dane) has skin issues due to allergies and I have been trying to narrow them down forever. He did have Demodex mange as a puppy but after three months of treatment it was gone and all other skin scrapes have come back good. I feed him TOTW Sierra Mountain which is grain free and has no Chicken, poultry or eggs but there are still constant break outs. I added coconut to his food daily, started him on a probiotic, we did benedryl for awhile, he is bathed weekly and so on and so forth. It clears up with Antibiotics but comes back as soon as the antibiotics "wear off".

I took Magnum a little over a week ago for Allergy testing and am waiting on the results of the that. It is costly but I am at a loss of what else to do so......I will let you know how it goes. I have heard positive and negative about it but for me it is a last resort. I will happily share the results for you when it comes in and you can follow the thread I started about Allergy testing as I will be posting results, treatment and such there.

I wish you the best. I know how frustrating it can be.

Thank you. It sounds exactly like us. Frustrating, and expensive. I was wondering about the allergy testing for us and was going to talk to the vet about it when we go back. Has there been any side effects from the meds? We are dealing with diarrhea....and im wondering if its from the antibiotics. Hope you get an answer from the test. Definitely would be easier to handle if you knew what was causing the problem.

Yes very frustrating and expensive. The things we do for these guys, right? I am still waiting on results and then I will share with you what comes back. I know some vets still do the "old school" testing which is very painful but this allergy testing is done through blood work. Here the testing was right at 400.00 and I have no idea yet what the "cure" will cost as it will depend on what he is allergic to I am sure it won't be cheap. I am sure the loose poop is a side effect of the antibiotics. It doesn't bother Magnum because he is on a daily probiotic but most dogs have horrible stool when on Antibiotics. Yes, at this point I just need to know what it is that is causing it and knowing Magnum I would be willing to bet that several things are causing it. LOL
