Whats a sh'mear?

Ok I was listenening to the news this morning and the anchorman was speaking with someone from NY. The guy from NY was saying how bored he was because he couldnt go out etc...and he said if someone was a tourist there at the moment and wanted to go for a bagel and a shmear (sorry if spelt wrong) then they couldnt. What on earth is a shmear???
