What to look for

Hello all Im new here and this is my first post. Im looking at a lady near me that has bullmastiff puppies for sale for $500.00 Im pretty sure that their not purebred or papered which isnt something that Im overly concerned with but I would like a good healthy puppy. What should I look for when I go to see the puppies what would be clues that this is good or bad? Also what are some questions I should ask myself to know that Im prepared to get one of these dogs. We have two dogs now a border collie and a labrador they get along good with other dogs but how do bullmastiffs get along with other breeds Im assuming that would mostly depend on socialization and training. What would be some good things for me to consider about this breed before I get one? Ive never had a mastiff but have been in love with the breed for years but at the same time I to fair to the dog and thats why Im here to get some advice and see if Im even cut out to own one.

Thank you

Matt

Have you seen what the parents look like at least? You might not care too much, but it's nice to get at least an idea what the pup might look like.

This. If they're not purebred or papered how can she justify saying they are BMs? What are the genders of your current dogs?

I haven't seen them yet Im waiting to hear back from the lady to set up a meet up. I did ask her if I would be able to meet the parents thats very important to me. My current dogs are a male the border collie and female the lab.

That's a good start. $500 is a lot of money for an unpapered dog that might be a mixed breed so definitely look at the parents. I'd still even try to negotiate the price if you find a pup you really like. To me it just kinda seems like this woman is a BYB so check out the environment the puppies & parents live in. Asked if they've been wormed & vaccinated.

Typically, I'd suggest not buying from this woman as what you've said already does suggest that she isn't exactly breeding to better the breed. Especially if the parents aren't health tested. But this is your call. I've had 2 English Mastiffs, both have come from BYB type places. My first had hip dysplasia diagnosed at 9 months, incontinence, & other issues throughout her 7 years of life. While no puppy is guaranteed, you do have a better chance of having a healthy, more true to the breed pup if you seek out a more reputable breeder.

Also, I forgot to ask, what are the temperaments of your current dogs? Initially I'd suggest getting a male puppy, but if your other male is dominant/alpha type then I'd maybe go for a female. Definitely introduce the new puppy on neutral ground. Having read another thread just recently about a puppy coming into an existing dog's territory, it didn't end well.

She said that they will be vaccinated and dewormed they were just born two days ago so its going to be a while before they will be released. Ive asked her if there is a health guarantee and a contract also. I havent heard back from her yet so well see what happens. As far as our current dogs go generally our female is the dominant one she was the biggest and baddest of her litter and she dominates our Border collie most of the time. The BC was a rescue from some friends that couldnt handle him any more and were talking about sending him to the pound, he does act like hes the alpha sometimes but generally most of the time you watch them play and tell that shes the boss.

We have 4 bullmastiffs. Only one of them is a male, & that's intentional. Bully males have a reputation for turning other male dogs, neutered or intact. Our boy is about the sweetest, softest dog you could meet. He definitely knows the girls rule the roost. And I don't know if there would ever be a problem, but I'm not prepared to find out. We are currently considering getting another bully, probably a puppy. And we're talking about another girl, just so Sunny won't feel threatened in his old age.
Bully girls are pretty laid back, although they don't call them bitches for nothing. :) They all have their moments. If you have a dominant female I would consider a girl. Putting another male in the mix might be too much. And another thing: you have one high energy breed, and another very high energy breed. While bullmastiffs are fast & powerful, they really like laying on the couch all day. Just saying.
