Training Titan to be a well rounded dog :)

I thought I will explain to yall what we have been doing with Titan to help him become a friendly member of society :)

  • We are going to puppy class for basic obedience and to play with other dogs.
  • We take him to outdoor malls to get used to people.
  • We taught him to sit before we go through any door.
  • While he is eating..we pet him, place our hand in the bowl, have him eat out of our hand, and we pick the bowl up during the middle of eating and have him sit. We do not want any food aggression and he has been great with this. Not an ounce of aggression ever shown. He also has to be sitting and calm before we place the food bowl on the ground.
  • He gives us all his legs without any fight. Makes it easy to clean his paws or trim his nails. We also wipe his bottom sometimes because it is dirty, but this gets him used to that area bein messed with for when we go to the vet. He doesn't mind at all anymore and the vet appreciates it lol.
  • We take him for walks at night around our neighborhood to get him familiar with the environment at night.
  • He has been exposed to lawn mower sounds.
  • He has been exposed to the vacuum. We let him calmly sniff while it was turned on and never chased him with it. Anytime he got a little too excited about it we stopped and let him sniff again. Now he is great with the vacuum. He either just watches or follows lol.
  • We have an aluminum fence that has no privacy and our houses are close to each other. So it is an absolute must he gets familiar with our neighbors. Neighbors on both sides are very nice and just adore titan. They pet him any chance they get when were outback. And he loves when they pet him. He looks sad when they go back inside lol. He is also familiar with the neighbors dog.

I know we are doing more but can't seem to think of it right now. All these go hand and hand with lots of treats rewards :) I will keep adding to this thread when I think of more. We eventually want to get him to be a therapy dog to vist children hospitals and retirement homes.
Feel free to chime in on other things we can be doing please. :)

Walk him at human parks on leash and show him the proper way to meet new people and pups. It's always best to have controlled meetings so Titan remains calm.

Titan is young and as he matures, he may become more protective of the family and yard or he may become aloof and ignore them.

Thanks deb! We went to an outdoor mall today and Titan got so much attention. Everyone could not resist petting him. He even met a few kids. We had him sit before we let the people come over to pet him. he did really great!
