Toxidia

I just got a call from the vet and was told that my new pup tested positive for toxidia. They prescribed Panacur. My biggest question is, is from negligence on the breeder's behalf or is this common? Years ago I bred put bulls and never even heard of this. The breeder acts like this can happen to anyone, but I am po'd.

Toxidia = coccidia from my understanding, and no, it doesn't mean neglegence. It means your pup was exposed to dirt. Which is a good thing. Even in a yard where poo is picked up within minutes the dirt underneath can be infected by coccidia if there's a dog on the property carrying it. It does however need to be treated, and Panacur sounds right.

Thanks everybody. I went and did my own research this evening and I do now feel better. I am assuming that this may also be why he seems small 10.5 lbs @ the vet when he was 7 weeks and 1 day old. Just trying to get the little guy off on the right foot! Thanks again.

I'll admit I've never looked closely at CC pups, but 10lbs at 7 weeks doesn't sound that tiny to me? We'll have to get one of the CC folks to comment. At any rate it sounds like he's in good hands!

Denna, was 14.6lbs at 7 weeks, but she's an EM, and was also one of the bigger pups in the pile.
Glad you're getting the pup all taken care of - sounds like he's in good hands!
