Tough dog toys

Well, our boxer/lab we adopted has proven to be a chewer of everything and anything when left outside for more than 5 minutes! Any idea what kind of things we can give her out there to keep her entertained so she doesn't try to eat anything else she shouldn't. I know some of it is because she is teething others I think she needs more stimulation while she's out there she gets bored if I can't go out with them. Any idea? She's already started eating the rug some of my son's water table and a bucket from one of his dumb trucks. I need something that she can play with out there and not destory in 5 minutes. I'd just crate her when I need to get something done in the house but if she can go outside and play and get a little excersize on her own than I'd really prefer that to crating her. She does get walked at least an hour a day too!

One of Cruiser's fav outdoor toys is a small tire that we bought at Tractor Supply. It is for a small trailer, he throws it in the air and chases it with us and even by himself!

I swear by Kongs and they're stuffable which is even better. Smear them with peanut butter inside and away they go. For teething I used to soak a tea towel in an unsalted broth, twist it tight and freeze it. Other than that I cant find much at all that Mooshi cant or wont destroy. Oh...i gave her the tube from a finished roll of tin foil the other night, it was a really thick walled tube. I put a couple of peices of left over roast pork in it, bashed the ends shut until there was about 1mm space for sniffing and gave her that to gnaw on and chew through and she LOVED it. You get chucks of soggy card everywhere but thats not so bad if it keeps them happy and quiet for a while.

This ball right here:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Virtually-Indestructible-Ball-Inch/dp/B007J2026O/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1349192339&sr=8-10&keywords=toledo+ball+for+dogs

I
don't know what it is about this ball, but it is like catnip for Topaz. She absolutely is obsessed with this ball. She flops over on her side and just holds it in between her paws if she's not batting it around the back yard. And it's JUST big enough that she can't pick it up, so it keeps her occupied with trying to grab at it. And it's rock hard. I think we have the 10" one.

I just would like to find something she can destroy that I won't mind. They have two jolly ball things one with a handle and one doesn't but they only mess with those if I am throwing them or kicking them for them to chase after. She's just so interested in eating well plastic seems to be her choice of chewing. She hasn't actually just chewer at the rug like most dogs would she flips it over and tries to eat the back off of it :/ I have a puppy kong I may have to try smearing with peanut butter neither her or Jagger seems interested in any kind of treat i've put in it! Just got to find something to curb her destructive behaviors I'm not sure if she gets stressed being left outside?

I may try the cardboard tube too and the tire! At least if she destroys the cardboard outside chances are it will dissolve pretty fast it's been rainy and yucky here lately!

Being a boxer mix, this dog needs to run. Being a boxer/lab mix, this dog needs to run. If the dog is exercised and I mean exercised, the chewing should subside a little. I'm assuming the pup is a puppy. Others have given you great ideas for chew toys.

We're working on getting her excersized more I've been thinking about getting like obstacle things to put in our backyard to work with her on maybe or would that just be a waste? She's an athletic dog that's why I picked her because she's going to be my excersize buddy of sorts. I just haven't quite worked up to anything more strenuous than a power walk just yet. I'm a little worried about having her run too much just yet too since she's still working out walking on her leash for walks and not stressing about other dogs and people she doesn't know. She has made amazing strides with her training though and I couldn't be more proud of her but she's still got a little timidness and I don't think I'd be able to react quick enough she started freaking out while running. She's never tried to pull or anything but just in case.

Mines not a jolly ball. It's an indestructiball. There's not handle and it's rock hard plastic. I keep saying I'm going to get a jolly ball for her soon, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I hear ya! I volunteer at an animal shelter and so many boxers and labs are surrendered because the owner said they were too active. That's why I know the boxers and labs need lots of exercising. I ask people looking to adopt, what is your lifestyle? Are you able to handle a dog with lots of energy who needs to run? I find these questions help in reducing the number of returns.

Heavy duty cardboard tubes and boxes. If you have a Kinkos, or other photo printing place nearby the tubes from inside the rolls of photo paper are heavy and thick and will take some time to work through. They usually just toss them in the recycle bin so it shouldn't be a big deal,to get some. Makes a mess, but its just cardboard so no biggy.

I bought a jolly ball for Sadie, and the handle was chewed of in 5 minutes. We still kick the ball and she will run after it once, and after that she has no interest. She just looks at me "I am not falling for that again, go get it your self, lady"

I had a lab/golden mix with jaws of steel. He could destroy anything we gave him. His favorite toy was the carboard tube from paper towel or wrapping paper, especially if we made funny noises through it first. He of course shredded them, then left the mess.
My hubby accidentally bought the wrong size radiator hose for the car, then stupidly left it laying on the ground. That hose lasted for months before the dog lost interest in it. They're very thick, like the tire idea.

When I had my lab I gave him Nylabones. He loved them and could chew on them for hours. Once in a while I also gave him uncooked soup bones...can be a bit messy though, but nothing beats a long walk at a quick pace. Labs have so much energy!

a picture of the cardboard tubes I get from my work, one new one (weighs almost 3lbs and the cardboard is about 1inch thick) and one old one (the old one's several weeks old)....

What about the good ol' roasted bones or knuckles (i.e. from Merrick)? We had some old chewed up ones, with just the middle part left, picked clean by previous residents, and Denna LOVES those. She barks at them and rolls around on the grass with them. She also likes the knuckle bone slices, which I think are a little safer for her to chew on. Some of her other favorites in the yard are things she finds... like plants in their plastic nursery containers (the containers are soooo much fun after you shake the plants out of them ) and sticks... as long as they've been buried at least 1 ft deep in a corner somewhere. We actually do let her have plastic water bottles - those make fun noises (for the dog) and can be flipped around easily. I've thought about getting/making her a spring pole, but so far, we haven't needed to go quite that far to keep her entertained. We can wear her out playing fetch a few times across the back yard 2x or 3x a day. We have a jolly ball with a handle and a canvas retriever to play fetch with. We also have an indestructaball, but she gets bored with that when she can't pick it up. We have a soft kid-sized soccer ball that she likes a lot better, 'cause she can carry it around - we do fetch with that one, too.

There are also specialty toys - the "everlasting treat ball" (which lasts about 15-20 minutes at our house, we have the medium size).

Or there's a whole series of "Busy buddy" toys. We have the "twist n treat" and "Bristle bone" versions. The "bouncy bone" is also a good one - all with places to put refillable rawhide rings to get the dog started.

I hear Denna munching on something in the backyard right now, which reminds me of another favorite.... PINE CONES!

We have TONS here... we live in a suburban forest... but her favorite are the extra large cones from the ponderosas, found about 2 hours East of us. We brought home 3 from a camping trip this summer, and she's just now getting to enjoy the last one. She goes NUTS for them. Flips them all over the yard, chasing them... then crunches all the pieces off, better than any squirrel could do!

Cow hooves and deer antlers. Be warned though, the hooves smell horrible when chewed and it is possible to eventually chew small bits off although this hasn't seemed to hurt Oscar yet (other than sometimes coughing the bits back up later). Antlers are great and Oscar hasn't managed to break one yet plus they're nutritious :)

I used to give my two plastic bottles but then someone told me to stop as the plastic can cut their gums....
