Toe furs & other misc

...Tessa is sprouting toe furs :)

All of the fur on her feet appears very short, but in the same place on all 4 paws, right in the middle of her toes, only between toes 2 & 3, --so dead center of her feet--there are about 10-15 2 inch long furs that stand straight up. I'm wondering where this is going to lead???

I thought Tessa was
some of her winter coat, but I think I was mistaken, because while it feels thick, I still do not see an undercoat, on her hind end, it was just fur that was growing in to make the back of her legs feathery-like.

On some sites I've been reading it says TM fur is course & stands straight up off the skin, & when undercoat is present it is wooley.
--I am wondering about this--it seems those of you on here say your pooch's fur is *soft*--Seems this can be diet related also-perhaps we're feeding different quality food & fur has different feel?

And do TM's generally 'make teeth' when playing? Meaning showing teeth--Some dogs have a different smile or grimace type of thing they do when they play where they lift their lips & display teeth. I'm trying to discern exactly what Tessa is doing-it can look a little scary with those teeth-both when she is playing & when she is being a snot. She lifts her front lips.

I've been getting some 'back talk' type of stuff recently when trying to correct her. She doesn't make any sound, but if I put my hand up--as if to say "stop" she will make teeth--this is definately NOT acceptable.
And a few times in the past week or so, if I go to grab her collar when correcting she goes for my hand as if to snap, but only mouths--this isn't acceptable either. And I also have been getting a paw up. She'll take her paw & smack my hand out of the way if I have my hand there. All of this seems to be occurring at once, so I figure she's in a phase.

The other thing that has occurred out of nowhere, with no reason at all, is an issue with cutting Tessa's nails. I've never had any accident, Tessa has never been accidentally nipped in the vein, so I have no idea what's up on this front. What I had been doing was regularly just shaving off the tips of her nails so that I didn't have to do a full clip--figured i'd attempt to keep them short & trained from the beginning.
Now all of a sudden Tessa wants none of that, & I cannot just clip her nails by myself like I was doing.
She jerks her paw back or mouths...So I've not been able to get her nails clipped in a couple of weeks & now they need done, but I need a 2nd person.
I'd done a ton of handling of Tessa as a pup, so I'm kind of at a loss with this one, because it did just come out of nowhere.

She's what, 7months + at this point? I've lost track....many many mastiffs go through a "terrible teens" (or pre-teens, however you want to phase it) starting at about the 7-9 month period, and lasting anywhere from a month to several months. Consistancy is the key. Some even require a back to basics on the leash all the time even in the house, crated when not explicitly watched, sort of managing during this time. And yah, for some reason clipping nails frequently becomes an issue at this point, I have no idea why....

I'd wait till she's relaxed and mostly sleeping, and start over handling her paws and toes and nails, but be firm about it too, she's mostly trying to see how much she can get away with, especially if she's never had a bad experience with it.

Apollo will show teeth when playing though if that helps. And yes, he uses his paws quite a bit to express himself....

Toe fur....I'll see if I can get a picture of Apollo's feet for you, but he has fairly extensive toe fur (I'm drawing a blank on when it grew in....). I don't trim it, though some do. We get quite a bit of snow, and I see no reason to mess with his built in "snowshoes". On the other hand they can sometimes collect "snowballs" in the winter. If she starts having trouble with that I use Mushers Secret on Apollo's feet to prevent them.

The rear hips and butt fur....is quite plush, but hard to tell between the winter and summer coats, it just kinda plushes up in the winter. Its accross the backbone and up through the ruff that the adult outer coat really gets rough and can stand up. I'm sure quality of diet makes a difference though. I guess you could call the undercoat wooley, I just call it plush!

Apollo's front feet. The rear feet the toe fur isn't as long, but is just as thick.

Ruth, I should've been more clear--the furs I am seeing are growing up from in between her toes--it can be seen on the tops of her feet-like someone stuck a bunch of 2 inch furs in between her 2nd & 3rd toe on each foot--front & back!

-the bottoms of Tessa's feet look similar to Apollo's but isn't as long yet.

Yeah, Tessa is being a downright snot a few times lately. I think she is challenging me sometimes, & it confuses me because she seems so noodly & submissive.
It usually occurrs when she is wound up & I am wanting to stop. Tessa rarely gets wound up & her wound up is much less than other pooch's woulnd up.
The 1st time it happened I didn't know what to do & I fliched as it was unexpected.
I think she saw this as an opportunity to PUSH it to another level.

Something else, not a probelm but maybe related:
Tessa has just started getting the 'zoomies', which I have no problem with, she runs like a bat outta hell from the livingroom to the bedroom about 10 times growling & snarling then stops. Usually she has a toy in her mouth. Since it appears self limiting, I let it happen. It seems like once it's out of her system, she's done. She doesn't bother me or the cats when she's doing it-unless she runs into us cuz we're in her path. Just seems like she's trying to stretch her legs. The last few times it has happened after long (1 1/2-2 hr) walks...

I've not ever really gotten out of basics with Tessa yet, but supposed I could tighten things up.

She's pushed it hard a few times lately & 99% of the time she could give a shit less even if I yell at her, but when she pushed it too far, she got the beejezus scared into her by me & i think she had a *light bulb* moment, because she is bothering the cat less.

and "Oww!" when mouthing no matter how squeaky & puppy like doesn't do shit, actually seems to make her want to do it more. I'm always in her mouth for something--pulling out stuff or removing a toy, she doesn't even try to defy me at those times, doesn't resource guard with me or the cats.

Tessa just turned 7 months this week.
Now the puppy behavior is starting. I'm wondering WTF?!
But it is welcomed, even if it is a royal PITA with her size.
She is beginning to have interest in toys.
before Tessa's toys were: a hug piece of driftwood, a rubbermaid water pitcher & a wool floor mat, and anything cardboard.
Now Tessa will pull apart a stuffed animal & decided she likes a tennis ball--not all of them, just one. & plays with her rubber duckies.
I suspect the tennisball thing is because she liked a pooch who was carrying one--though she's seen dogs with tennis balls before, she liked the pooch & he played with her & gave her his ball :)

She needs more dog on dog play time i think.

ah! Apollo's feet are smooth on top, but it could be more adult coat, or winter coat coming in and causing her fur to grow funky on her feet.

haha, welcome to the terrible teens lol.

And yah, I don't usually worry to much about zoomies either, as long as they're not knocking things over, cause it never lasts very long.

Jiggers has fur that sticks up between his toes. His is on all 4 feet and between every toe. It started to come in the same time that his feathering started to grow so 5-6 months old. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1376168976.788756.jpg I don't know if this is what you're describing but it sounds like it to me. For scale that it Kryten's front paw on the floor underneath Jiggers' paw.

Ya Smokeycat--that's it exactly.

Upon closer inspection, it actually is the fur from the side of inbetween & also the bottom that's pushed up between the toes, if i slide a finger between her toes, most of it goes back down inbetween the toes, til she plays with something with her paws, then it's back up.
