Tip of the day ... Plantain leaf

I thought that with summer almost here I'd share this information for anyone that may not know about this beneficial "weed." Plantain is a plant that is considered a nuisance. You can find it almost everywhere, probably right out in your yard. The leaves of the plant are wonderful for bug bites, stings, rashes, and many other things. For stings you can just take the leaf, chew it up, and use it as a poultice for the sting or bite. It really does work. When we get more in the yard I will harvest and infuse some oil for making personal use products. Hope this is beneficial to someone. Here's a link with more info.

Thank you Boxergirl, I've got some serious bug bites (I think) a bad rash on my arm, I took benadryl last night. My arm was very swollen. I will keep this tip in mind.

We use plantain a lot! The kids know how to identify it, and use it. They have shocked some other kids before w the info. Even the parents were impressed. It does work very well! I know someone who was burned from pouring gas on a fire. He used colloidal silver and plantain salve, and it healed very quickly with minimal scarring.

Want to add one today. Colloidal Silver has many uses. Among them are antibiotic, antimicrobial, anti fungal.
I have used it for flu, and colds. Pink eye. Burns. Bites. etc...
When Sophie's pups had their tails docked they became infected from Sophie over cleaning them. I used colloidal silver, and it cleared up very quickly. Worked great.

Colloidal Silver is good stuff for sure. It's contraindicated for anyone taking Thyroxine for a thyroid condition, so just a heads up there.

Hey Boxergirl. My hubby is very stubborn. He refuses to go to the Dr. He either has a goiter or perhaps a thyroglossal duct cyst. Not sure since he won't get checked. He is not taking anything for it, but do u think he should avoid silver in case it's his thyroid? Or does the silver just effect the medication?

Here's what I'm going to tell you about what I have been told. You probably know both of my girls are Type 1 diabetics. One diagnosed at age 2 (now almost 26) and the other at age 12 (she'll be 23 in August). Both of them have thyroid issues that are being watched by their Endocrinologists. The younger has always had a very enlarged thyroid (goiter), a cyst, and has symptoms that they test for to see which issue is going to show up eventually - all endocrine related. The eldest has a cyst on her thyroid. It was explained to us that while most cysts remain benign, it's extremely important to monitor the nodule because it absolutely can turn cancerous. Thyroid cancer is very treatable when caught early, but can have a very different prognosis if not treated early. To my knowledge there is no harm in using silver if he's not currently on medication, but I'm not really sure. I strongly urge you to encourage him to go in and just have an endocrinologist check him out. If they can do an ultrasound to see if there are any cysts then you'll know whether he needs to be monitored for their growth. You have young children that need him, and this is something that is really no big deal ... unless it becomes one.

Thanks Boxergirl great info and advice. I have tried everything short of clubbing him over the head and dragging him to the Dr. I will continue to try and persuade him. It's grown over time, and he is embarrassed about it. Men can be sooo stubborn!!( Not all men ;) ) I agree completely that he has to get it checked. I think he's scared of what he's going to find out. Crazy thing is it shrinks some when he fasts.

April, do push him. It's such an easy thing to get checked out and the dangers of ignoring it are just plain silly. I would recommend you go to an endocrinologist, rather than starting with a family practitioner or clinic. One stop shopping for someone that doesn't like doctors and endos are specialists.

I told my older daughter the statistics for late diagnosis of thyroid cancer and she said, "Geez, thanks for scaring me Mom." I told her that she was welcome. A healthy dose of fear might ensure that she doesn't procrastinate now that I'm not in a position to force her to go. I love her, but she definitely is a procrastinator.

Wow! I totally forgot about Plantain! Wish I had remembered four days ago when this bite/sting made my face swell up. Benydryl doesn't do anything but make me sleep. Now it's turned colour a little and Jon told me this morning that it almost looks like a black eye that is healing. The swelling is pushing my glasses over and distorting my vision, too. Urgent care doctor said I had to live with it (so I've been hiding in the house.) I wonder what he'd think of a plantain poultice?

I'd say go for it!
