Thor, Dog of Thunder

The white fella is Thor, an American Bull Dog x Bull Arab who we have been fostering for Furever Friends Bendigo. We noticed early that Thor seemed to have a problem with his legs, after blood tests, examinations, x rays and MRI's we have discovered that he has inherited a bad gene from both his Mom and Dad which means that he a congenital problem that is effecting his central nervous system. He is not in any pain at the moment but will eventually lose the use of his legs, bladder bowels and after that it will effect his lungs and ability to breath. We will look after Thor until the vets advise us that it's time for him to go, in the meantime I'm going to use Thor's condition to spread the word about responsible breeding.

I'll keep posting updates on Thor's condition but would love it if people could visit Furever Friends Bendigo Inc Facebook page and maybe donate a little something to enable the group to continue its good work.

It sounds like he has Degenerative Myelopathy? Is that right? It's a common condition in boxers. I've had too many friends lose their dogs to this disease. My Leo was diagnosed with DM, but he passed from cardiac arrest before it really became a problem. If it is DM, spread the word that there is now a DNA test for it. It's relatively new. When I look for my next boxer I will only choose a breeder that has added the test for DM to their other health testing. Wishing Thor the best of luck.

Jeremyd1960 - if it's DM there are exercises that can help. Google has quite a bit of info on that. Also, as things progress, there are things that some of my handier friends have built to help the dog maintain some independence (and give your arms a break) like swinging overhead slings for eating. I know there are specific carts and slings that are better than others if that's something you consider doing.

Jeremyd1960 - Thank you for looking after Thor and giving him a great home to love while he's here. Hopefully with love, good nutrition and good exercise, his symptoms can be minimized and he can enjoy life with you a good, long time.
