Stacking 101

I told the trainer about my intention to show him and she said she'll modify his training so he doesn't auto-sit.

Love this. The first dog I worked in the show, I received so much grief from the trainer about the heel sit. I refused to do it as I didn't want an automatic sit and every time I would do it in class she would make a remark about how I don't listen properly. Glad you found a great trainer. :)

Ugh there is nothing worse then a dog that sits automatically upon stopping! So now while we do obedience we don't train sit on the stop immediately and so far it is working. Friends of ours are able to give a command as they are coming in from gaiting and slowing down, they say pretty dog and their dog goes right into stack mode. I tried pretty dog and mine think it is the cue to give kisses

Lol, my handling instructor yelled at me about my dogs being over trained ;)
That said I would rather have a polite well trained dog any day. A huge pet peeve of mine is the number of "show" dogs out there with no manners.
Training the dog to stack is no harder then heeling off leash. It is just working at it.

So we finally went to our first conformation class last night, and what a rude awakening it was! I was completely unprepared.

I decided pretty last minute that I would be attending class, and just went straight from work. (Scrubs, crocs, hoodie to conceal an unfortunate stain from earlier in the day, six foot leather leash w/ poopie bag holder and all. ) I thought there would be more instruction, but you're supposed to have your stack and free stack down pat. It was so not the relaxed atmosphere I'm used to in obedience. Mason was a model puppy when we were outside waiting, but that all went to heck the second we stepped inside. We don't have a stand stay, so he was doing a lot of sitting and downing, and once he found a crumb on the floor he was on a mission to find any and all treat remnants. We were quite the sight for a minute there: Me, sweating profusely with a hunkering puppy nose to the ground and six feet of leash dragging behind us.

This was all my fault. We won't be able to attend again for another 2-3 weeks, so I should be better prepared. On the plus side, Mason got a lot of nice comments and the instructor liked his movement. Ahhh, the silver lining. :lolbangtable:

Hehe. :)
There are local conformation classes every Friday here. The 2 other BM owners I know in town both show their dogs and are always telling me I need to go to one of them. I'm affraid Meathead would make an arse out of myself at this point, he needs a little more work.

You should get out there! Junior is gorgeous, I know he would do great!

ETA: What is everyone using as their show collar/leash?

I'm no help, I can stack my Doberman no problem but Branka, miserable fail lol. My Doberman has great conformation though, and Branka probably not.

You can use those fancy show leads (just make sure you have a sturdy one as some can un-link) or you can use a nylon corded slip lead, like mendota slip leads just pick a thin one so it isn't so clunky. We have all types here and use just about all of them depending on who we are handling.

LOL! I remember my first handling class... man was that a fun time!

They are nice... I have had a problem with one leather lead it stretched and then I hated it.

Old thread, but usefull lol. Was it braided leather or just a strap? I've got braided leather collar and lead for Apollo and they show no sign of stretch at all.

From what I've read some people will tape natural ears to try and get them to fall in the shape that they want. Pretty much the same as taping to get cropped ears to stand in the correct shape.

Stacking is HARD...it's one of my more frustrating things because I end up getting tired and impatient and then Venti just moves more and more. I can't seem to get him to A. keep his legs further back and B. his head up and straight and C. He twists around and won't straighten up. I'll study the tips placed in here!!

Actually I had them stay and watch while I watered the grass. All they wanted was the "Get it", nothing else mattered.

Is nice, Black Jack was trained by a professional handler so the minute he steps foot in tha ring is all business.
I love his stack in there lol, nothing phases him :)
