  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Serious skin issues

My 1 1/2 yr old female Bull, Remi, has a SERIOUS skin issue.
She is my 3rd Mastiff (2 Bulls & 1 Neo) and I have never experienced this issue before.
She has licked/chewed/rubbed most of the fur off her butt (lower back) & tail.
Her skin is raw, course & dry where the fur is missing. No where else on her body has any issues, just her lower back & tail.
I have changed her food twice, it got a bit better each time, but eventually returned to current condition.
I am thinking of trying "dinovite" (supplement I heard about on the radio & available at dinovite.com).
I am in no way associate with "dinovite".
When I used a search engine, 90% + reviewed the product positively. No one (that I read) specified using it with a Mastiff.

Has anyone here used the product with success?
She also STINKS to high heaven!! Even shortly after a bath, PPPUUUUUUU!

Other than the fur/skin/stank issue she is very happy & healthy.
Thanks for reading & helping!!!

Never heard of dinovite...did you get any advice from a vet? What kind of food is she on? Hopefully another member will chime in who has dealt with something similar or the same. Best of luck!

Vet just says it's allergies related to the food.
We were feeding Purina Puppy, then Ol' Roy Kibbles n Chunks, and now Purina Dog.

Hmm, I'm no dog food expert, but I know a lot of mastiffs don't do well with grains and chicken in their kibble. Maybe try a grain free and chicken free kibble?

Too me t sounds like a HotSpot" but I can't exactly see what it looks like on your dog. It is a vet situation as they usually wash with a special medicated shampoo as well as a topical ointment and possibly even oral meds. I would do some digging and google searching about hotspots.

Never heard of that.
Will check it out.

I will try anything..
Got any suggestions along that line?

oh boy, lol! I'm hoping Smart_Family will chime in, she knows more about dog food than I do. I just switched my boy to Blue Buffalo and he seems to be doing well on it. I hear Orijien is wonderful, and Taste of the Wild...it takes a bit of research on the specific food to find one you want to try; on my first trial I got a grain free chicken free food, and then did research and found out there was an ingredient I didn't want him having. My advice would be to research first, then shop.

NEVER hear of any of those brands!!
Guess I have my work cut out for me.
We currently have 5 dogs (2 Bostons, 2 Goldens & Remi), the Bull is the only one with any issues!
With my luck, if I find the right food for Remi, the other 4 will start having issues!!

From my research and listening to the experts on this forum I concur with Kujo. I would switch to grain free and try and eliminate chicken meal and wait for smart_family the dog guru advice...

Pssh what do you guys need me for haha. Besides the whole grain and chicken free thing, in general any food you can find at the grocery store or Walmart is not a particularly good quality food. Foods like blue buffalo wilderness either the salmon or duck can be found at petco or petsmart.

I would try changing the food before resorting to supplements. Otherwise you'd just bandaging the problem if its food related. Granted its not going to be overnight results, especially since you'll need to do a slow transition from one food to another plus it usually takes a couple bags of the new food to start seeing results.

Good point about the bandage.
Wife's gonna make a Petco run tomorrow on the home, hopefully the healing will begin.
Thanks for all the responses.
We love our "big beast" and hate seeing her like this.
If anyone has other suggestions/advice... I am listening!
