Puppy Dandruff

My 3 month old black Corso has some dandruff, and obviously with him being black it's quite noticeable. We give him a bath with oatmeal shampoo every other week and that seems to help for a day or two but it comes back. We're feeding him Earthborn Grain-Free Coastal Catch and would change food if nothing else works, but want to exhaust all our options before making that switch on him. Does anyone here recommend any products that would help with this?

You can add in a tablespoon to start of coconut oil (one of thr best) or olive oil. Do not add too much to start or it can cause the runs.

Have you tried supplementing with Organic Coconut Oil? It is about $20.00 a jar and has a lot of moisturising and health benefits. You would feed him 1 tsp of coconut oil with each meal. You can melt it and drizzle right on his Kibble. It would take approximately 3 weeks before you would notice a difference but I think it would help. His coat will havea little extra shine as well.

I love coconut oil for pretty much everything. Its amazing for people and animals.

I used to recommend fish oil, but I think coconut has it beat. No fishy smell that sometimes comes through the skin with fish oil. Not to mention, some dogs dont care for fish which makes is hard to dose. Coconut oil is nice and bland.

I use it after baths on myself and I can never walk around my house after without Barron's tongue licking my legs. He loves the stuff!

Great advice given! The only thing I would add is that possibly you are bathing him too often; I use daily brushing to help instead of bathing so often. I do use the Earthborn brand also and have been very happy with how Bella does on it :)

FYI: not all dogs like coconut oil. Titan refuses to eat it. I use olive oil in Titan's food. I agree, you may be bathing the pup too often which causes the oil in the skin to dry up.

Unfortunately after Gio comes home from puppy play group he is COVERED in slobber so we try to give him a quick rinse or wipe down with wipes....I think the bathing part is unavoidable but we will definitely be incorporating coconut oil into his diet to see if that does that trick

I bathe Ruger once a week and have no issues with dandruff and his coat looks amazing. I can't stand a dirty dog and even worse a smelly dog. LOL I, too, would try the coconut oil.

Crickett has never had dry skin, however, I decided to add some coconut oil to her food since it has such wonderful benefits. She really loved it, but after a week she actually started to have dandruff. After doing some research this does happen to some dogs, of course it was my girl :( I would certainly give it a shot, it can't hurt.

Have you tried a soft bristle brush? Like the ones they use for Baby Hair? They are usually good for short coats and distribute the natural oils in a dogs hair evenly. I believe they pick up and brush off dander as well. Not a long term fix but will help to remove the dandruff she has now.

We used epi-soothe conditioner, which helped with itchies... might help with dandruff, too, by putting some oils back on the skin direct?
And I'd also go with either fish oil or coconut oil in each meal. We use 2 human sized salmon oil pills a day for Denna.

Everything that's been said - Plus, I give Boone a nice massage with coconut oil before a bath (short coat - easier). Basically slather it on, rub it in (he loves the attention as well!), leave it on for maybe about 2 hours, then bathe. I love how soft his coat is after that. :) And no dandruff!
