Protection training a Cane Corso?

I realize now you might be asking me about her parents? Their names were Yunno and Luna I believe, and I sent you a pm about the breeder. Is that usually something people share online??

Yes, people want to know! It is a small world breed, people know everyone, it seems!

The corso world is a very small one and while a lot of time most might not have meet or see your dogs parents when you look into the lineage often times they have kennels that most that been in the breed for a bit have heard of. As to the workability of the lines in your dog I honestly have no idea what they are like as workers so someone more familar with looking for working lines would have to tell you what they might be like, even then you can get the odd puppy that comes from non-working parents that ends up being a great worker.

(First, please Forgive my complete ignorance on this topic)

Our breeder told us she was a great candidate for a service dog, and we are really wanting to train her to sniff for peanuts for our son who is anaphylactic to them. Our trainer thought it would be perfectly fine to have her cross trained (assuming she passes the temperament test) in scent work and protection training, because plenty of police dogs are cross trained between the two. A different, non dog related, forum I'm on had users going nuts at the thought of having a protection dog cross trained as a service dog. Is this something I should avoid? If it is dangerous, we would have to choose scent work over protection training.

It is not dangerous if the dog is trained right. When I trained protection my dogs could be turned on to attack but than turned off just as fast. My dogs were approachable, loved kids and got along with other dogs. When you say you want to train the dog to alert on peanuts does this mean mainly in the house or also out and about? Unfortunately the US does not allow dogs into public places like many other countries. When I was in Germany it was very common to see a person sitting outside a cafe having coffee or lunch with their dog in a down next to
them.

she would go out and about with us. As long as she is a trained service dog, she is legally allowed in any public building with us.

i have and do personal protection with my dogs. started with a neo, worked and work corso and use a presa. i got hooked into personal protection for three reasons, number one as a safety measure for my home and family, number two is to be a part of using a specimen of a breed for what is was created to do, to see a member of a breed do what (assuming it is a correct specimen) it's ancestors and founders were trying to acheive. number three and the one i was not expecting is the bonding that occurs between dog and handler. i have participated in about every area of dog competition and had a great time with almost all of them. with this... the dog is going beyond what other events have asked, to the dog, he or she is saving my life. the bonding that develops is incredible. i have never achieved that level of bonding in any other event. when we train, i ask my dog to give it all. i mean all. with the great dogs i have and have had, they go over and above. if every other reason i have for this kind of training became invalid, i would still train because of the bonding that occurs and is strengthened through this type of training.

Do you really need a PP dog? There are other breeds better suited. If you want a guardian, a good Corso should have that inherent trait. Then again, I view it as my job to protect my family.

Well there are some upstanding CC out there doing PP... its your dogs job to protect you as well! Just should get then from a breeder that breeds for that. .
