Pronunciation of Cane Corso

I've pronounced it "kah-nay" since I met a dog rehabilitator that told me I was saying it wrong. Until then, I thought it was 'cane" too.

I personally like this one. ^^^ I guess since we're having this discussion in English, the "Anglicized" pronunciations will vary from how a native would pronounce it, same as with many other foreign words.

The first time I read about these dogs I thought it was pernounced cane. The breeder corrected me and since then, I always pronounce it Kah-ne. I get so pissed when people ask "what kind of dog is that?" Then I reply and they'll respond "oh a cain corso" as if theyre trying to correct me. A couple seconds ago they didnt know what kind of dog he was and now I'm being told how to pronounce my dog's breed. I chuckle when people ask and I say cane corso and they've never heard of one, but when I say hes an Italian Mastiff. They reply "ok, just like the Turner and Hooch dog"

We will be getting our new puppy in a few weeks and yesterday I called the vet to make an appointment for when he comes home. The receptionist asked what breed and I said (pronunciating) "Kahnay Corso". She said hmmm - I don't have that breed on here... I said well you may have as CANE Corso. She said "oh yes, I see it now - I've never heard it pronounced that way before. I said Kahnay is actually the correct pronunciation. She replied wow - that's weird - even on tv they pronounce it CANE Corso. I got the feeling she was insinuating that it was ME that was pronouncing it incorrectly.

I admit when I first became interested in the breed a couple of years ago I pronounced it CANE also...

This has always been a little funny to me because I am italian-american and grew up around people who's first language was italian. I honestly don't think either way is "wrong" think of it like the words marinara or mozzarella two very common italian words in america that virtually no one pronounces the way an italian speaking person does, doesn't make them wrong just not italian speakers. Oh and I say Cain, not sure if I just like the sound better or because I feel like people think I'm pretentious when I properly pronounce italian words as an american with a last name that ends in a vowel lol

It depends on who I'm talking to, my family then it sounds much more italian, the general public and I sound like I'm asking for extra sauce for my breadsticks at Pizza Hut lol. I'm not sure if you've ever seen any but there have been several sitcom and satire jokes about Hispanics in american that speak english as a first language however whenever they say a Spanish word they roll the r's hard and pronounce it with a heavy accent, I feel like it's usually newscasters, anyway I don't want to come across as a joke or smug so whatever I think the person I'm talking to is more likely to be used to hearing is how I try and say any italian word
