Pronunciation of Cane Corso

I have always pronounced Cane the same way as I would a candy cane but lately I am hearing more people pronounce it more like "Connie".

Which is correct? How do you pronounce it? Have I been an ignorant CC owner for the last 16 months?

I'm with you. I had always pronounced it like a candy "cane" until recently when I saw one on a dog show. I don't remember how they pronounced it but the way we've been saying it appears to be incorrect. Oh we'll, now we know!

The correct way is ("Kah-nah"), but don't feel bad, when I got Corelina the lady at the groomer corrected the way I pronounced it(embarrassing) and I said it the way you have been for the first 2 months I had her.

It is Italian for Canis (dog) and Courser(coursing/running) dog. Hence cane corso.
It IS hard to explain how to pronounce it.
I look at it this way; Kan-ye (the singer) and Corso shouldn't be all that hard. I trust by now, whether we like it or not,we all know who Kanye is!
From Wikipedia
"The Cane Corso is a descendant of the canis pugnax,[SUP][2][/SUP] dogs used by the Romans in warfare. Its name derives fromcane da corso, an old term for those catch dogs used in rural activities (for cattle and swine; boar hunting, and bear fighting) as distinct from cane da camera which indicates the catch dog kept as a bodyguard. In the recent past, its distribution was limited to some districts of Southern Italy, especially in Basilicata, Campania and Puglia[SUP][2][/SUP]The Cane Corso is a catch dog used with cattle and swine, and also in wild boar and cougar hunters. It is also used by night watchmen, keepers, and, in the past, by carters as a drover. In the more distant past this breed was common all over Italy as an ample iconography and historiography testify.

(I gave up telling people she was a cane corso; just said italian mastiff. The puppies should come with an ancestry briefing and pronounciation guide.

LOL! You aren't he first and you won't be the last. When you haven't been told the correct way it is hard to know how it is prounounced.

We won't hold it against :p

Deb, i've read these threads for years and in my head it is still a candy cane. Must be the Texan in me, I don't speak eye-talian very well. ;)

I'm still confused. There are two pronunciations stated as correct in this thread. Kah-nay and Kah-nuh. I always thought it was Kah-nay. Are they both considered correct? And is it two distinct syllables, ore more like one?

Just have to channel your inner Italian when you say it... maybe with a little lilt/bounce in your voice, too. :)

I second this, thanks for posting! Now that I think about the Italian it makes sense.

Kah-nay is the correct one...at least according to any reputable breeder I've ever spoken to. I have never heard it Kah-nuh...but I did have a BYB try to correct me saying Kah-nay and said, 'you mean CANE (like candy cane) Corso?' The conversation about her program was over quickly.

I sought out more info on this and it seems the phonetics are this:
KAHN-ay KOR-so

Think of the soft end lilt in Italian. If you must for reference, think of Mario saying it. ;)
