I am a dog lover! I have been all of my life. My most stalwart companions on this planet have been mix breed rescues. When I came home from Iraq this past time my warmest greeting was from my old female Black Lab Mix. I've had a dog as a member of my family for the vast majority of my 36 years on this planet.

That being said...I have recently made a tough decision and am somewhat ashamed to say that one of your treasured breed died by my hands. It was the first Fila I've ever met. I'd never seen this giant dog. It was beautiful and scary at the same time. I needed to investigate. When it wagged its tail at me I though I had made a really big playful friend. When I stopped however, it lowered its ears & tail, and lunged at me. I nearly shit myself. I've never been so scared. Luckily, I'm fast and Fila's don't like being punched. Nevertheless, It stalked me for an entire block as I backed away. It didn't help that it's little mongrel partner was attempting to flank me.

The street in front of my house is where my children play. I hope you have the picture. For those of you who don't and those of you considering how novel of a concept the Fila is...Overprotective fathers such as myself don't think its novel when you can't keep your dogs contained. You may tell yourself that I have a prejudice against certain breeds. Then explain why I would spend substantial cash for a quality specimine of Standard American Pit to be a companion to my own mother. Oh by the way, I have felt the teeth of a Pit Bull sink into my flesh at a young age. I sent this Fila to doggy heaven and if you can't imagine why then you are welcomed to sniff my taint. If you know the Fila, then from what I read about the breed, you'll agree that they can easily get into really grave misunderstandings.

What I need from people who care is this; an honest opinion. I need to be able to tell a district attorney why I can agree to plea community service, probation, and lose my pistol but...I cannot aquire another Fila and sentence it to live in the tiny assed backyard of a young, broke, stupid, irresponsible child.

If you happen to be young, broke, stupid, and irresponsible well...it sucks. I've been there. Today, my animal friends are all a little bit on the "easy to care for" side of the spectrum. Perhaps yours should be as well. I'm still grateful for my ability to protect the humans I love from irresponsible pet owners. Keep that in mind when you are evaluating "strong", "powerful", "sexy" looking trinkets as pets.

If you live in Austin, are familiar with my case, or just want to take time to call me a dog murdering penis face then your input is appreciated.

I'm not sure what your looking for. But if my dog was roaming the streets, and attacked you, I would expect you kill her. Though it's not the dogs fault. There is nothing wrong with this breed. More people die from dumb ass punks with legal guns shooting people for no reason inside of one year, then every fila has ever killed over time. The fila is not the problem any more then the gun is. In the wrong hands both are bad. But untill we as a society choose to regulate the things that really pose a threat to society, I see animal regulations as a joke. Out law drinking, smoking, all fat foods, all processed foods, all guns, knives, bats, cars, and all the other things that kill way way way way more people, then we can talk dog regulation.

You were not wrong for doing what you did if the dog was trying to hurt you.

So if you never seen a fila before how do you know it was one? And approaching strange big dogs is the thing to do? I thought you said you have had dogs all your life, are we not taught that as a young child , not to approach strange dogs???????? I feel like this is a joke, are we being punked lol ok ok.

Yeaaaaahhhh, I'm kind of not understanding where this is going, either. Are we supposed to give him legal advice? And yeah, I, too, was taught at a very young age never to approach strange dogs. Even ones with owners that have their dogs properly leashed. They don't come with the word "FILA" written on them like a pair of sneakers. Where was the owner? Were there tags? A wagging tail doesn't always mean a dog wants to play, and if that was the signal, it may have been to his buddy. I can't tell if he was being sarcastic when he was saying "treasured breed".

I'm confused.

*scratching head* Not sure what to make of this post. I agree with mountainfila in that you approached a dog that you didn't know because it was wagging it's tail. *scratching head* I agree with Winterspring, how did you know it was a Fila? I agree with chuckorlando, if a Fila is chasing you to do you harm, then you do have to protect yourself.

As you state, you are a responsible dog owner. Why did you approach the pup? *scratching head*

I re-read your post. You said: It was the first Fila I've ever met. I'd never seen this giant dog. It was beautiful and scary at the same time. I needed to investigate. My question to you, if you knew it was a Fila, why did you want to investigate? 2+2 doesn't equal 3.

Something about this just doesn't ring true to me....not sure who AB is referring to but is this post a hoax? Someone we know trying to wind up the Fila owners?
