so i have invested in a petsafe wireless fence system for my dogs ..i actually purchased 2 of the systems so i can have a larger roaming area for my dogs ..i have a total of 15 acres but i have 1 acre fenced in ...but my smaller dogs like to dig out and find all kinds of areas to try and esape out of ..so i plan to put a stop to this ..and id also like to able to drive in or out of my gate without the dogs escaping ..does anyone have this system ...any pointers or advice or helpful hints would be so much appreciated ...thanks

I'll be watching this post as I have 3.5 acres and would LOVE to fence it in, but we have deer & other wildlife passing through and a fence would be BAD for them. If we can set up a wireless fence to keep our girl corralled I will be SO HAPPY!

I haven't heard great stuff about the Petsafe brand and mastiffs as they are just too tough for the brand but I know there are a couple that have to be installed by professionals (up here it is invisible fence but not sure of the name down there) and if I was putting one in I would probably go with one of those types because they generally have a warranty and the technicians are always quick to respond if you have any trouble with their systems.

Biggest issue and one that I have become more aware of since we now have 2 intact male puppies that have moved into the area is that it won't keep other animals out. So while I am probably going to be putting it in it will be for when we are out in the yard with the dogs only and otherwise they will have to be in the privacy fenced in section.

The big downsides to such fences, like Mary said they don't keep things OUT. So tormenting kids, cats, etc can still come in, and get chased. Also Alot of these dogs will run right through them if protection (or prey) drive kicks in. I HAVE the indoor version from Petsafe, we use it to keep Arty from ambushing the cats at their litter boxes (sigh). He has on SEVERAL occasions attempted to run through it when chasing a cat. Unfortunetly for him there's no "other side" due to its set up, fortunetly for him we were home and were able to rescue him.....he's stopped trying now.

Petsafe: if I could find a different indoor system I'd switch in a heartbeat. I've had to replace the whole setup (thankfully not expensive but still) once already, and from the reviews thats not uncommon.

the reason why i got the petsafe brand is that it was recomended to me from a friend of mine that has a bull mastiff and a boxer /mastiff mix ...he said it worked great for him ...and he said he has had it for years and it is the wireless kind ..but i noticed on here that i didnt see any reveiws when i typed it in ...not some of the reveiws i read at petco and petsmart all seemed to say they loved it and alot of peopel said that they quit using it after their dogs was trained ..the ones that i saw that didnt like it i dont think they trained their dogs on a leash and trained them to the boundaries ...but i could be wrong ..another one of my friends has the petsafe wireless and her yard isnt fenced in at all ..hers is the one that you bury the wire ...she lives right on a busy road and it has worked for hers and she loves it ...but her biggest is a pit bull mix and all the rest are smaller ....i will start setting mine up in the next few days and see how it goes ..im hoping with dke being younger that he might learn quickly and not be tempted to test it out too much ... so we will see...lol..but im looking forward to suggestions and reveiws on here

The house we just moved into had the Petsafe system already wired around the property, and the previous occupants had success with their two labs. We decided to try it out for our two EMs... Not so successful. We'd been teaching them the boundaries for several weeks (and knew it was working because they both got shocked a couple times) and decided it was time to test the effectiveness off leash. The first time Knox caught sight of a deer, he charged right through. The system has a slight delay (the dog has to approach the boundary slowly or stand directly over it in order for the collar to respond), and the system didn't even register Knox flying over the boundary... No beeping, no lighting up, no shock.

I didn't feel comfortable relying on it, especially in unspuervised situations. We decided to teach our dogs the boundaries and limits on remote collars instead, and have been very pleased with the results. But, with this method, we never have our dogs outside unsupervised regardless of how well I feel they know the boundaries. Too many variables.

I have the Innotek wireless fence, and had the Petsafe fences for years at our other places. I've always had this type of fence, so I love them (obviously). Works beautifully. Make sure to keep the flags up for a visual for the dogs when training. They are very helpful. We are in a neighborhood and don't have the space you do, but it gives people walking by on the sidewalk more peace of mind too seeing the flags. Otherwise they just see loose dogs.
And the wire is just 16 ga or 14 ga wire from Home Depot. What you are paying for is the transmitter. So we go to Home Depot all the time to get more wire when we need to and just splice them together.

My dogs immediately respond to it, as they are both chickens. Just the beep will cause them to go and sit on the patio.

glad to see that it is working for you steve ...i got the 2 wireless transmittiers they go up to 90 feet a total of 180 in each direction ..my yard is completly fenced in totally surrounding the house ..on one end of the house i would like for it to go a little further to the end of my fence but it doesnt go that for but i guess it will have to be far enough due to where my house sits ...it doesnt sit in the middle of the property it more to one side than another ...but i might come up with an ides to make it larger ...may build somthing to put it in to keep the unit out of the weather ...im testing it out today and to start the training ..hopefully it works great ...im getting it to keep the dogs more contained in my yard than just a fence ..a little extra boost ..i noticed that duke can dig a huge hole if he decides he wants out of the fence as well as my other dogs are diggers too ..just a fence wont keep them in .. so i it works out for a little extra umph ..that says you best stay in your yard ...lol

I'm sorry. I have to correct what i wrote. It's not wireless. I was thinking "underground fence" when reading your post. ;) We had to bury the wire. But I love them and think it's totally worth it. Every dog I've had did very well on them.

And it's Suzanne actually, not Steve. I get that all the time though! ;)

How do these types of fences work with the snow? Do you have to clean the snow off the wire line?

One downside of this fence is:
When your dog gets so scared/prey driven that he'll flies out, for example because of fireworks or a running cat, he'll take the shock for getiing out, but when the "danger" is over/the prey got away, they often won't take the shock to get in again.

We live very close to the woods and often have wildlife like deers on our property.
Our 5 foot chainlink fence is no problem for them, they simply jump over it like it wouldn't be there, but luckily our dogs can't do that, so they stay inside the property.;)

Dakota Kid - Works fine in the snow. Only problems we have had are with the collars getting too wet. But that's more with a hose than the snow. They are water "resistant" only. I believe the signal goes two/three feet above where you put the line. So if you bury it about two inches down, it works great. The snow doesn't bury the signal at all. We always forget the collars on the dogs when we take them for car rides, and nothing happens because they are above the signal barrier.

We put the wire across our driveway along one of the cracks, and then hubby put a silicon caulk over that. That was the one part I was worried about breaking, but so far so good after three years here. We did break it once where it left the driveway crack into the ground with the weed whacker. but we are masters at fixing the line breaks now after having them since the early nineties

the system i got is the petsafe wireless brand ...it requires no wires to bury ...you just plug it in and turn it on ..and go outside and test where the collar beeps at and put a flag ...just as a visual marker for the dogs ...im loving it ...i little winnie dog wont go near it either ...he is 8 years old and though we have a fenced in yard ..hes a digger and now he stays in the yard ..and he has never stayed in the yard ..they love to hunt ....duke my mastiff refuses to go even close to where you get shocked ...lol ...he barks and patrols the yard but only in his boundaries ...and im loving that ...when i drive in the front gate i dont have to panick wondering if my dogs are going to take off down the road or that i will have to fight them to keep them in the yard ...i purchased 2 units ...each one has a 90feet radius completly around for a total of 180 feet, and when you add the extra unit you get twice as much range..for a total of 360 feet ...it emits a radio signal that pics up on the collars ...and you can add as many collars as you want ....my hubby just added a plug outside and i put one in a insulated dog house that i had so the signal reaches across my entire fenced in area now ...i cant brag on it enough ..it a big peace of mind ...always wondering if aomeone was going to steal him or shoot him or hit him with a car ...now i have the double safety and i dont have to worry about them digging under the fence anymore ..this system couldnt be easier to set up ...my dogs learned in 3 days where the boundaries are ...they respect it and im loving it ...woo hoo !!!!

I'm thinking bout running one of these on the inside of our fence. So if someone walks down the road, the dogs cant jump up on the chainlink.

Chuck - That's why we have it in our backyard. The back is 3/4 fenced in (just not to the sides of the house), so we ran the wire along the bottom of the fence line on each side and Topaz cannot get withing three feet of the fence line anymore. They have one setter named Kelly that can jump to the top of their fence on all fours and just stand teetering back and forth staring at Topaz. I thank God that she has good balance, because Topaz and her would tear each other apart if they ever came together. We have worked out a sort of schedule with them and learned when they let their dogs out, so we just wait until we hear them go in to let ours out now.

Can those fences hold a dog that's in drive? Ie. Attack mode...iv always wondered about getting an electric fence my main worry is that there gonna see something and be like eff the shock..

Tiger, if the dog has a high drive they're not usually recommended, at least by themselves. Now in combination with a regular fence they often work well. But for dogs with high drive (prey, protection, etc) they tend not to work well as the dog will drive right through the zone before the shock registers. My Arty has a high prey drive and WILL drive right through pain to chase the moving thing in question.
