Ode to a Mastiff

Hi folks, I know that you've seen this before, but with the change over to the new format, it was lost in translation. I wrote this for my beloved Bailey, softer than silk and tougher than steel.

ODE TO A MASTIFF

There is no if or and...I STAND, my face a soulful droopy softness turning to resolve,
a glint like brightly sharpened steel flashes in my steady gaze.
My muscles tense and my tail curves like a bent bow.
If evil comes here, I have it in my sight.
I match your calculating look with equal intensity.
You may not pass.
You will not win.
Don't try your whiles at this door, don't come near my yard.
Approach with fear for I am guarding here.
My Name Is Mastiff.

There is a thrill that we all feel when our sweet and gentle family pet goes to high alert. I'm always impressed and sometimes moved to poetry. I have never felt safer in my life. She puts the fear of God and Dog into the ill-intentioned that lurk about looking for opportunities. She is my protector, my champion, my pet.

She's my shining star....the love of my life....my heartbeat.

Beautiful and I agree there is such an absolute beauty in that taut alert stance. It takes my breath away every time Diesel goes into it. Quite majestic.

I'm glad you liked it Nik. I was sad when the new site lost my poems. I'm going to have to dig out a hard copy of "I Miss My Dog", written 25 years after my Beagle's death. It took me 25 years of grieving before I could put pen to paper.
I hope when I wake up on the other side my four-legged family, both cat and dog, will come running to me to welcome me home. That will be a glorious day.

Hi Elizabeth (or is it Liz?)

Thanks for sharing your beautiful poem on here.

You are braver than I, lol.

Poems, are such a clear window into the heart and soul, that I'd be a little bit worried to share any of my poetry on here.

It is a lovely poem, and definitely speaks to the heart of all dog owners, not just Mastiff owners.

Keep 'em coming :)

Thanks Elana. I originally posted it in September of 2014, but it was lost with the turn over to new platform.

Yes, it's hard to post poems...but you either like it or you don't, so why hold back something you feel so strongly about.

I have to go digging in my files to find the other poem that I posted. It was about the loss of our Beagle. It took me decades to write because the depth of loss was so great. I have never stopped mourning him. 14 years was too little time together.

They really are the heart of us, aren't they?
