FRANKLIN FURNACE — With afternoon temperatures climbing into the 90s, everybody's looking for a way to cool down.

And so are their dogs.

The big DockDogs event, scheduled Saturday in Franklin Furnace, offers a chance for dogs and owners to cool it.

The event, scheduled for Mike Lewis's pond, 1792 Junior Furnace Road, for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature veteran Buckeye members of DockDogs demonstrating and teaching newcomers how to get their pooches introduced to jumping off a dock into water. They will explain the difference between jumping for distance, height or speed.

It's free and open top the public, both dogs and their owners.

For details on such things as what to bring, directions, where to camp, call Rod Niemer at (740) 646-3674. For reservations and to register dogs, call Ginny Moroid at (740) 550-3405 or e-mail her at morold@sbcglobal.net.

More information is also available on the website, www.buckeyedockdogs.com. Go to the events page, organizers said, and click on the link for "Let's try dogs, near Ironton in southeast Ohio."

The Ohio club is for pooches and their owners who love Dock Jumping and competing in Big Air, Extreme Vertical, and Speed Retrieve.

"If your dog loves water, it’s a Buckeye DockDog!" said Niemer.

Formed January 2007, Buckeye DockDogs is the Ohio affiliate chapter of DockDogs of Medina, Ohio, the independent governing and sanctioning body for regional, national and international dock jumping performance sports.

From March to October, Buckeye DockDogs holds indoor and outdoor practices, training sessions, demonstrations, and competitions where you can get tips from canine-loving members, and introduce your dog to the sport of dock jumping—the fastest growing sport in the canine world.

"Join us for jumping, flying, splashing, and competing fun!" Niemer said.

At Franklin Furnace, dog/handler teams will exhibit their different techniques for success in Big Air, the long jump equivalent for canine athletes in DockDog competitions.

Those new to the sport can get tips from club members, and learn the benefits of joining Buckeye DockDogs.
