I have always loved mastiffs but had never really considered getting one til recently. After searching the web, i cld never find a breeder near me. I did find a couple a 2-3 hours away but the timing was never right. And then finally i seen a dog that caught my eye for some reason. Everything that I had read to look for in a breeder had been broken just about but i was still drawn to this puppy. At first, I thought it was impulse but now i realize it was much greater.
After driving 1450 mile round trip in less than 28 hours our mastiff was home but far from comfortable. She lived in constant fear of humans & she was underweight.
After a trip to the vet, we have changed her diet (she was originally on Diamond High Energy & fed once a day by breeder) and enrolled her in school to help her brake her fears. Progress is remarkably but still a long way to go.
How would you handle the breeder? Report them, call them out on things or just be thankful we have saved a puppy from that environment?

Just finished visiting with Roxy at the trainers & wow - a completely whole new pup. While no training of commands have happened she is learning to love & trust us. She has had no physical abuse to our knowledge but just completely neglected & had no human interaction & was just terrified of us to the point she wld trimble & shake at times. At 8 months old & 60 lbs I had to carry her everywhere because she was afraid to walk around us & to put her on a leash sent her into a panicky frenzy. Today she played with us & chased us around the yard & my 12 yr old daughter walked her on a leash & as time progressed we were all able to do it. An amazing day after knowing where she had been emotionally. Also she has added some pounds due to her new diet. She had been on Diamond High Energy which caused her to grow tall first then add some weight. She is definitely going to be ok & an excellent dog.

Pretty pup, and it sounds like you're doing all the right things to make continuing progress with her physically and psychologically!

Re: Reporting the breeder: Unfortunately, in terms of making a difference/closing down the breeder's operation, in most states the standard for what are 'acceptable' conditions is deplorably low -- e.g., dogs are licensed, not severely underweight, regularly provided food, water, medical care and some form of 'shelter', and are not up to their eyeballs in feces. If these minimal conditions are met, no one is likely to be interested in a complaint. So, if what you witnessed at the breeder's violated any of these rudimentary basics, I certainly WOULD report them in a heartbeat. If it involved issues like dogs being kept isolated in outside kennels without the most rigorous hygiene, and with limited socialisation and/or exercise, it probably wouldn't be worth the time and aggro.
