New Puppy

Hi all!

My name is Brittany. I have a new cane corso puppy. His name is Titan. This is my first experience with the cane corso
breed. I've had him for about four weeks now and I need a little advice. He is 12 weeks old.

My first problem has been crate training. I let him out to play several times a day, but when he is in the create he howls
constantly. I feed him in the crate with the door open and praise him when he goes in. I'm not sure what else to do for him. Can I make him stop howling, and how long will that stage last?

The second question I have is about his diet. I'm feeding him Wellness puppy food. Is this ok for him? I was originally looking for Innova Evo, but wasn't able to find it in store anywhere close. He seems to be doing fine on what I have. Any advice on food is welcome.

As far as training goes, is it ok to use food for praise? I was told not to reward him with a treat because he will stop the behavior when I stop giving him treats. Is that true? Also, I would love suggestions for trainers near Washington Court House, Ohio. I'm equally close to Columbus and Dayton. I can't seem to control the puppy biting. I have children. He is otherwise wonderful with my girls, but they can't play with him much right now due to the biting. It wasn't much of a problem until here recently. It seems to have gotten more frequent and now that he's bigger it hurts. What can I do?

Thanks in advance!
Brittany and Titan

Welcome! Can't wait to see pics! As far as diet wellness is okay but he really doesn't need a puppy food. How is his stool? Evo unfortunately is only appropriate for mastiffs over two due to the high calcium level.

His stool has been fine. Its solid and looks ok. So should I just switch him to an adult food? Grain free?

It's up to you. If he's gaining weight okay and his stool is good I'd probably go thru one more big bag of wellness before changing him. Too many changes in a short period of time isn't good for him. If and when you do change though, you'll want to do a slow transition from wellness to the new food. Many mastiffs have issues with grains and/or chicken so I'm a big advocate of avoiding both to be better safe than sorry. So ideally an adult or all life stages food that's grain free and chicken free with proper levels of calcium and ratio of calcium to phosphorus.

My pup liked to me in the vari kennel that's more enclosed than a wire crate. My friend put a blanket over the top with the front open so her pup felt more secure. Your pup is so cute!

Congrats on the new pup. He looks alot like my dog.. lol Regarding his food I will agree with Smart_Family about keeping it a Grain Free and Chicken Free meal. Spartacus even tho he ate the chicken a little he realized on his own that it gave him the runs. Smart_Family and many others on this forum told me to try Taste Of The Wild - Sierra Mountain flavor (sometimes can be found in your small mom and pops pet store) he took that very well. He loves it and it keeps his stools solid.

great pup, spartacus are you still feeding taste of the wild after this past recall? just wondering as we had no problems and the dogs love it but with that recall and all our taste of the wild coming from the diamond plant in bloomsburg, i changed mine over to anemet and verus as diamond seems to have recalls with alot of brands they make? what is your take on all this? thanks

Beverly,

My concerns were the same when I read up on all the recalls but after doing more digging and research it was bought to my attention that TOW-Sierra Mountain and 2 other flavors which I can't name right now are actually "good" products.
