New DdB owner. Training advice needed

Looking for good books and or videos on training the DdB breed specifically. I'm not looking for show training but more just every day family dog training. Thanks!

Congratulations on your new pup, please post pics when it's home with you! I saw your earlier post looking for book recommendations....it depends what sort of experience you have with dogs so far but to be honest, I think the "Dummies" series is very good basic information and you don't have to be a "Dummy" to get a lot out of those books. ;) And training really isn't breed-specific, certainly not at the basic level. Depending on the line and your individual pup training largely involves teaching self-control, channeling certain drives and socializing to create a calm puppy...whether a DDB or a JRT, the basics are pretty much the same. My other suggestion would be to look up obedience clubs and classes in your area and get signed up for group classes and puppy kindergarten for socializing and hands-on tips. I would classify myself as a very experienced dog person but I still get a lot out of classes (and books and other learning materials.) I have 30 years with Rottweilers, grew up with working Border collies and have put various titles and CH on several dogs and I still keep on learning. My EM pup did puppy K and is in basic obedience right now. I do it because it is inexpensive, fun and he enjoys it a lot although he is clearly not going to ever show up in the obedience ring.

Welcome! I think I've learned more from reading the threads here and discussions with other DDB and mastiff parents than any books I've read. Liz and DeannasMom in particular.

I'm a fan of the"for dummies" series of books. I always pay them forward when I'm done (politely, not to imply the person I'm giving them to are dumb lol). Honestly enrolling in classes is a good idea on many levels if that is an option for you. I like Solidk9training on youtube because he has a lot of easy to follow videos using multiple tools and different breeds. Be careful with youtube trainers though there are some bad and good, some need to go back to the bookstore and get the "for dummies" version. This forum is honestly a fountain of information so if you have specific questions this is a great place to start(with the search function).

Look up nothing in life is free training. There are good articles and you tubes out there on it and for me it had been the best tool in my training tool box :)
