Neuter question for my 5m pit/doguedebardoux mix puppy

Hello my name is Kimmie and we just rescued a pitbull /dogue de bardoux mix puppy ! We named him Koda Bear !
He is now 5 and a half months old ! We are absolutely head over hills in love with him !
I have some questions, we have rescued and loved pitbulls , but never a mastiff mix ! So we are new to this breed! I was hoping to get some questions answered cause what my vet says and what some other people say are conflicting ! Can someone here help me out ? And I’ll make an informed decision ! Koda has an appointment to get fixed Tuesday , he will be 6 months old on the 29 th . Do I go ahead with this against my better judgement ? He does have a small umbilical hernia that they said could be fixed at the same time but told me I need this also done right away at the same time he gets fixed. When I inquired about him getting fixed too early because of future Koda issues they told me it was nonsense that he should be fixed right away and that I already delayed it from last month . That it’s better and easier for him and me to get it done right away . I want what’s best for Koda not me . Not easier for me . I was told by others and did some research we should wait til after a year or older because of growth and joint issues , is this true mastiff families ? Does it matter cause he’s mixed and not full bred ? Our other rescues were already fixed so I had no choice well now I do . Thanks so much for your time !

Youve got a stunning boy, vets will always say to get them fixed, i dont get my boys done at all unless its for medical reasons, but no vet on this earth would be telling me what to do with my dog re neutering unless it was for medical issues,
If i was going to get my boys done, they are ccs it wouldnt be until at least 18 months old.

Oh ok , the rescue includes it in the cost . But I really just want to wait and I don’t see why it’s such a big deal if I wanted to do so ! They had me freaked out like I have too and then scared me because of the small hernia he has . I called another vet and they told me the same thing and I was like oh so maybe this is what I am supposed to do . But if I go to the other vet obviously I’m paying for the whole thing . Thank you he is such a good boy too !

Hi there,
It's a tough topic and one that can be quite divisive. I personally do not agree with neutering and have 3 yo intact female DDB.
I believe the hormones produced by the reproductive organs are essential to a healthy dog, male or female and they contribute far more than just the ability to create puppies.
It seems that rescues and vets always push spay and neuter. What are the reasons they gave you for neutering your dog ? Let me guess it was something do with cancer prevention and over population.
You should do research and make an informed decision.

You're going to have a disaster if you don't wait until that dog is a mature adult to neuter it. I wouldn't do it at all, but if you do it's a dick move to hinder its development like that before it's mature. Yes, wait.

Yes, spaying and neutering just stops development and is there to prevent puppies... guess what, if you're a good dog owner you wouldn't get puppies. It also doesn't have anything to do with aggression.
Wow, preventing cancer by making the dog's QOL worse... we're here for a good time not a long time.

I'm late to this discussion. Some rescues - most rescues - require altering as part of the contract, with proof of the procedure having been done. If that's the case here then I would contact the rescue directly and discuss your feelings. If they insist on upholding that part of the contract then I would come armed with information about why it's best to wait until the growth plates close. Wishing you the best of luck.
