My First and Second Tibetan Mastiff

Hello everyone,

I have just recently acquired two Tibetan mastiffs 6 months and one 5 1/2 months both brought over from china around 2-3 months of age. Becerrillo the male suffered from altitude sickness and has recovered and Dominga the female is doing fine. They are both underweight and Becerrillo has awful plaque buildup on his teeth but, they are both amazing pups and get along with Atillah. They were both on a Kirkland turkey kibble diet when I received them and since then I have switched them to raw. They have had diarrhea since the diet change, about two days ago. I have no problem with that because the consistency of the feces seems to be getting thicker with every bowel movement. My biggest concern right now is that they are connecting the raw chicken with their diarrhea and have gone on a hiatus from food. What should be my next step in getting them to continue on their new diet. Also, I have no intention of feeding them kibble except as a LAST resort. They are also very aggressive with their meals. I began feeding them food by hand and I can take food from them if they are eating now (I took a risk). But, they seem willing to attack Atillah my Presa Canario if he walks past them, more realistically within about a five foot radius of their bone or meal, and id rather not have him getting worked up and hurting one of the new pups. They also seem to do this if they leave a bone or antler somewhere and he walks past it or near it. What I have been doing so far is taking the bone/antler away and shutting the whole operation down but, they have not stopped with the aggressive activity yet. So any advice on either subject would be great. Here are pics of both of them. Here is a pic of the boy. The girls pic is taking to long to upload so I will try it again later.
Btw I was referred here by Cinnamon Roll :)

Is the chicken you're feeding "enhanced" with broth? If you're in the USA and you're buying it at the grocery store it very likely is and some dogs are very intolerant of that. You may want to switch to an unenhanced poultry (turkey would be ok if thats easier).

Also their sudden refusal to eat much may not have much to do with the diarrhea and could be stress, but also could be just typical TM "I don't feel like eating today" that they all seem to do.

THey're lovely!

Thank you everyone. This forum is so welcoming and helpful. As of now Dominga had her 2nd solid bathroom adventure and Bercerrillo had his 1st relatively solid pass. He uses the bathroom a lot less than her for whatever reason but they both seem to be doing fine.

Ruthcatrin- I get the whole free range chicken from whole foods when they go on sale for 99cents a lb. I just chop it up bag it by body part and freeze it. Do you know if they enhance theirs? As far as them refusing food I think you are absolutely correct. Luckily they are both interested in eating again. Do you have a list of things that Apollo likes to eat? My Presa is a beef, chicken and duck guy but hates fish and organs and is indifferent towards turkey and pork. The TMs seem to be fine with everything so far but I don't want to upset their stomachs again offering "exotic" (to them) fish and meats.

I am still having problems with their food and bone defense. They really seem like they would try and kill one another if one happens to walk past while the other is eating. The weird thing is Dominga doesn't care if Bercerrillo walks near her when she eats but, lunges at Atillah like he is the grim reaper coming with bad news and Bercerrrillo could care less if it was Atillah, Dominga, or the wind blowing to hard. He will also leave his meal and attempt to get up and protect it if one of the pups is behind him. He also does this with bones he gnawed on hours earlier if one of them attempt to pick it up, unless I pick it up (which I tend to do) and set it down later then it is fine. I just want to make sure I am taking the necessary steps to alleviating this behavior. I don't want him to feel he is on guard when everyone else is just lounging around enjoying life.

I've never shopped at Whole Foods, so no idea, but they ARE required to say so on the package if it is enhanced.

Apollo will eat pretty much anything, though he's not fond of fish. Just go slow introducing new protein types to them and you'll be less likely to have upset tummys!

For food and toy guarding:

Continue to hand feed as much as possible. But require politeness, if they're SNATCHING the food, require them to behave politely to take it.

Also, if you can find a high value treat that they all love start working on them with giving a small bite of treat to one and then the next, and so on. The one getting the treat has to stay seated and polite, and the ones waiting their turns have to stay seated and polite.

Start working with them on "trading up" when it comes to toys and chews. Ask them to give up what they're working on and give them something else equal or better than what you just took. At first do this with just you and the individual dog, then once its solid there, so it while the others are around. The closer the proximity the better.

Thank you ruthcatrin that advice sounds fantastic. I'm will start implementing it with their meal tonight. I will keep everyone updated on their progress and concerns. Thank you again.

Correction on my last post, I meant to say I will start...

On another note, does anyone know what a TM should weigh around 6 months I feel my two are underweight (I can feel their bone structure, hips, lower mandible, shoulders, ribs etc.) they have been gaining weight since I received them, the male was about 50lbs and the female about 52lbs. They have since gained about 2-3 lbs a piece.

Theres a weight chart for Apollo on here, with his weight at various weeks of age. I just updated it, so it should be near the top.

Each dog is an individual, but I can honestly say that keeping Apollo "slim" instead of "skinny" is a constant fight!

I just took a look. My 2 seem a little behind but, I should be able to get them up to where they should be in about a month. Thank you again.
