Mooshi Update - Shedding, Recall and Photos

Hello all –
Its been a whilesince I have updated or posted any pics of ‘the kids’ so thought I would take amoment to share. Really these are forour new TM members to have a look at as they show Mooshi before and after sheblew her coat, she is now my bald baby and her tail, OMG her tail is so wispyright now it breaks my heart LOL.
As for your off lead questions that pop up now and again Ihave also included a picture of Mooshi on one of our off lead walks, just toshow you that it can be done, it takes tonnes and tonnes of work and will neverbe 100% but is there a dog out there that is a 100% at anything? Maybe so but I doubt it’s a TM, unless ofcourse you include chomping on anything made of wood.
A good example of Mooshi’s off lead: last night hubby and Itook the mutts on a walk we haven’t done in some time, it’s a country path thatwinds up farmers fields on both sides, one side has fenced in live stock andthe other side is crops. We usually walkabout ¾ of the way up the path and then cut on to the fields towards a littlewoods at the end, cut through the woods and take the path back which is what wedid last night. I know that sometimesthere are horses with riders along this path but I have never seen them in theevening UNTIL LAST NIGHT. We had justcome to the end of the last field where it meets the little woods and all of asudden from around the corner comes a horse and rider. OH SH1T was the first thing that came to mindas Mooshi was off lead. The horse came upon us, the horsereared, which of course made me think OS again, the good news is though themoment I called Mooshi, in my high, squeaky, isn’t mummy fun voice she camepouncing over with a great big doggy smile on her face. Almost saying hey mom did you see that reallybig dog over there? She didn’t bark atthe horse, she didn’t run up to it, she stopped for about 5 seconds to have alook at it at a distance of about 10ft, I called her THIS WAY, I started to hop, skip and jump along the field in the opposite direction of the horse and riderand Moo followed, very happily running behind me through the long grass whichis her most favourite part of the walk…..I think it tickles her belly.
The one thing I didn’t do was panic and chase after Mooshiyelling at her that would have made her want to go towards the horse and riderfor sure. Rather I have learnt that withher if she thinks I am the best thing since toast and peanut butter then shewill 9 times out of 10 follow me and my silliness. This doesn’t work with my Akita and he is definitelyan on lead dog but with Moo its what works.
And finally here is a new picture of my handsome boy Boo BooBear.
OH a note for Raechie….I got my pay rise!!!

Is it not illegal to have naked dogs out and about in public!

Wow! They really do blow their coat. She is still just as sexy as her mum.

Looks about right. Apollo's still stubbornly holding onto sections of his coat, he's barely shed out his belly at all!

Ruth - do you see what I mean about how skinny she is as well. This girl just refused to put on a couple of pounds! She's not under weight but i would say there is not an ounze of fat on her, you can feel her ribs, bum bone, spine, shoulder blades!! Im at a loss at how to get some lbs on her because she isnt a big eater. I was happy as a pig in .... this morning when she came in asking for breakfast (she lays by her bowl)...but usually she isnt bothered at all. Any ideas on how to get a couple of lbs on her would be appreciated!

Been there with Apollo......You feed occasional raw chicken drums right? You might try adding some fattier cuts of raw beef or pork. GO SLOWLY adding it though. At first a chunk no bigger than half your thumb (seriously, some dogs are WAY sensitive not only to the change in meat but also to fat), and if she does ok on that for a few days then you can double it, and so on.

She gets a raw whole leg on a Sunday afternoon as a special treat, otherwise my two are kibble fed. Bear is a fat piglet at the moment and Mooshi is skinny. Did I read somewhere chicken feet are good for help putting on weight or was that they are good for coat? I'll try the beef for sure as I bought a BIG roast the other day and cut it in half, roasted the half and it turned out as tough as old boots so the other half is in the freezer. Maybe I'll defrost that and start giving her a bit for breakfast? What about cooked beef? i have some left over from Sunday, quite a lot actually...

Chicken feet are good for their joints (though their coat might be helped too). Cooked beef is fine, but be extra carefull watching her with the fattier sections there, as some dogs are even MORE sensitive to cooked fat than raw. Other dogs don't even blink at it. Apollo can eat a chunk of raw beef suet (which is basically pure fat) the about half the size of my fist with no problems (ok, I have small hands, but thats still alot of fat) and can tolerate any cooked human meat I hand him from sausage to pork trimmings. While Arty can barely manage a piece of suet the size of my thumb NAIL, and even a small bite of sausage gives him the runs.

Moo has a pretty sturdy constitution so I'll try. If you look at Bear the wrong way he gets the runs but not the Moo! :lolbangtable:

I finally managed to get some padding on Apollo's hips by feeding him suet all winter. Its not a THICK layer of fat, but his hipbones aren't as sharp any more at least.

Start with fattier cuts of beef and see how it goes, then if that goes ok you can try suet. Again, I started with a tiny amount (the size of my thumbnail for Apollo, half that for Arty), and slowly increased. I've not actually found Apollo's upper limit on what he can tolerate, but suet being pure fat I'm not comfortable feeding him more than I am! Over the winter it was a chunk about half the size of my fist every other day. I've cut that back to once a week now that the warmer weather is here.
