Mac is Officially Teething! And some Great Dane fun

My little man is getting big! Today I noticed he's been rampaging on his toys and finding things to chew on. He's very good with "leave it" and he even learned that the "trade up" goes both ways. He wanted the shoe back that we got from him so he kept bringing me different toys trying to get it back LOL!!!!
He gets free roam of my room at night because he does so well, he always has, I think he's been crated a total of 4 times at night and that is only when he didn't want to sleep and I had to work in the early morning. This morning I woke up and his favorite toy had become a fatality..

He had no idea that he had done something wrong...

He's 14 weeks old now and we joined the monthly "great dane walk" in our area, there are no mastiff groups but he LOVED seeing all the big dogs...he tired out about 1/3 of the way and I carried him to the halfway point where he got to ride back to the starting point with one of the member's husband...he loved it because the man had loads of water and a/c. I think the man didn't want to give him up ahahahaha

I was totally not dressed for the occasion as I had to rush from work to make it on time. Between that, the high temperatures, and carrying his 45lb butt up and down hills I'm fairly sure I had heat stroke. We had loads of fun but the drive home was a complete blur and by the time I did get home I was vomiting and extremely confused and in serious pain, I don't remember much of the night but I definitely will not be carrying him again...even though next meeting he'll be way past my strength point to carry anyway.

Look at mac, hanging with the big dogs!! :) Isn't he beautiful? Yikes, carrying him? I am glad to hear that you made it through but be careful, our pups are "babies" but, they are two heavy a load to carry for sure!! The photos are great!

Looks like he had fun! When is his birthday? Maybe he shares the same birthday as Duchess who is also 14 weeks! :)

His birthday is April 12th :). And Yes, I really didn't feel much of an issue at the time carrying him, and I often walk for miles and miles but I think the hills in conjunction of the added weight was just a bit more than I could handle. But at the same time I didn't want to push him too far, SO glad the guy took him back at the halfway point hahaha!

Wow! I could've sworn her birthday was either the 8th or the 12th!! I'll have to check her AKC papers when I get home to see. It would be cool if they shared the same birthday!! I feel your pain on carrying though. I pick Duchess up to weigh her at home & every week it gets a little harder & harder to pick her up. Of course she isn't in the 40s yet, still at 30 lbs. :( I'm considering putting her on a different food as I'm thinking maybe she just isn't hanging on to the nutrients.

Such a treat to see that many danes, I"m lucky if I see one every 3 years, lol. Mac is getting bigger I say it a lot but it still amazes me how fast they grow.

I joined the group, being a former Dane mommy it is driving me insane wanting to get a pup LOL. Mac is an oddball in the group but everyone seemed to love him hahaha!

Our boy Winston is 14 weeks also (April 16th is his birthday!). He is also going chew crazy!!! We have a very hard time keeping him out of our landscape bark! But now he is also deciding that wood in the house and fabric on couch is good......I'm exhausted from following him around all the time! However, I can't imagine carrying him up and down hills!!! LOL That definitely would be exhausting!! Winston is 40 lbs. I had to laugh though.....Sorry!

Any one have any good advice on how to keep chewing to a minimum. What works / worked for you?

Also, Mac is adorable!! He looked so innocent and confused in that picture after chewing up his toy!!! LOL

I've given him a frozen chicken quarter, and rolled up frozen dish rags. Those keep him busy and satisfied, I'm going to get some chicken broth tonight to soak the rags in to make them more appetizing. He has never tried to destroy anything that wasn't supposed to be in his mouth. He put his mouth on the wooden coffee table once, but stern verbal commands are very effective with him and he has never ever done that again.

Many Danes are like this, I love that they are so "sensitive" and that's usually all it takes!

Sherri, our pups have the wood chewing stage in common. In fact I had Duchess enclosed to the hallway with her bed, bully stick & plenty of water when I left for work. I came back around lunch time to let them out & as soon as I opened the door I heard a thud then the sound of guilty mastiff feet & she met me at the door. I thought what in the world?!? I knew I secured the baby gate before I left. Apparently she got bored & decided to see if standing up against the gate then somewhat hurling herself over it would ultimately get her on the other side. Well it worked & she went to town on the windowsill in our sunroom. Lol. She knew she was in trouble as soon as I walked in the door. I didn't even say one word to her & that head sunk & she sulked off into the living room. The funniest thing about her is you can use a stern "no" with her & that little turd will still wag her tail like she's saying "yeah...so?" quite the character!!! Glad we can all share our 14 week old terror stories. ;-)

Ummm....Winston is the same as Duchess! I say no and he thinks if he turns his head and body away from me that I can't see him! LOL And then he ignores me! Winston hasn't really gotten destructive in the house....YET. Mainly, eating the landscaping bark! I can say no, but he makes me pry it out of his mouth!! I'm so over that!!

But if I notice more chewing on furniture, etc. has anyone used that Bitter apple or something similar?

i try a stern NO, but he is pretty stubborn. I have been freezing knotted up dish rags and he does like that.
