Looking for a new pup - Need Advice

Hi all. I have been lurking around and would finally like to introduce myself. My name is Jeremy.

Anyways, I am interested in a new pup. We recently (6 months or so) had to put down our Import GSD and am very interested in the Boerboel breed.

I am certainly more interested in the smaller (hound) type dog and was wondering if anyone here could recommend a breeder on the west coast (Ca here) who specializes in more of the hound type "smaller" dogs.

Also I am pretty undecided between a male and female. Do you folks have any recommendations? I have my heart set on a male but maybe a female suits us better. First and foremost this will be a family dog so temperament is critical. I do have a 10 year old daughter so our pet will have to do well with older kids.

Thanks for listing and look forward to learning all I can about this wonderful breed.

Jeremy, welcome to the addiction. Sorry to say I do not know of any breeder here in the US that breeds the farm dog Boerboel except maybe Mae Boerboel and Shombay Boerboels. It seems that everyone except South Africa are obsessed with the larger more muscular type Boerboel. When my male is mature I will try to get into a breeding program to bring this type of Boerboel to the US but that will be at least a year from now.

If you get on Facebook and check out the Boerboels for sale group and American Boerboel Club you can present your question there. Look for breeders registering with EBBASA, BI and ABC/AKC. This will keep you out of the controversial colors and breed lines. Breeders using Mizpah, Linjo, and Gretchen lines should be producing good dogs close to the Afrikan type. Not Blitzkrieg Boerboels though, he purchased the name of the kennel but he is not Mizpah. Mizpah is now Authentic Boerboels and she has shipped 4 of her line to the US recently but they are puppies still.

Looks like Prairie Boerboels has a litter and they have the Linjo line. Not sure of location though. http://www.prairieboerboels.com/
