Lillie at the lake

Thanks! And they did have fun!

Lillie is 16 weeks today; yesterday at the lake was the last thing on my must do list of on our "8 week whirlwind of socialization and exposure to lots of stuff" journey. Not that socialization ends now, lol, but she is my first puppy and I wanted her to experience everything I could think of by that 16 week mark.

Here's a couple more pics at the lake (she much preferred the mud to the water!) and one of her in downtown St. Paul, MN in a dog friendly building - she even got to ride in an elevator!

That is soooo exciting!

So, Lillie is my first Bullmastiff and my first puppy, so I have nothing to compare her to. However, seeing the other puppies in our puppy class, I'd say I got a one in a million dog :)

She is MUCH more mellow than every other puppy I've ever encountered. She is strong and confident, in fact, my trainer likes to pair her up with the shy and reserved puppies in class for socialization because she is so steady and very dog savvy, she is not all "up in your face" and bouncing around.

She learns very quickly, and likes the challenges of learning new things, but she does not enjoy mindless repetion. She wants me to know she can "sit" and "down" but she doesn't want to do puppy push ups for no reason. She can be stubborn, and there is no "aiming to please" so to speak. She doesn't really care what I want her do, she may or may not do it, and will just look at me like "meh, whatever". This makes training a challenge, but her sweet, calm, outgoing personality makes up for it 100 times.

Now, she can be very vocal about what she likes and doesn't like, if we we physically had to remove her from a situation or put her in her crate, she would snarl and growl like SOMEBODY was going to go down in this situation, and we'd find out in the end who it was. But it was all talk, and she's pretty much grown out of that unless she's very tired and being very stubborn. I just ignored her and went about my business of making her do what I needed her to do.

She bit and chewed and peed and got into trouble like any other puppy. Patience, consistency, activity and training are key.

I think the most important thing is that I researched my breeder very carefully. She is phenomenal! As a breeder and a resource and she is truly working to better the breed. My pups parents are both CHIC certified, and the breeder does the "super dog" program or early neurological stimulation, as well as early scent introduction with her pups. She also provides them with an otherwise phenomenal environment until they go home. I cannot speak enough about how important the breeder can be to the type of pup you will get.

In addition, my life has pretty much revolved around this puppy since I brought her home. I had certain goals to meet within this developmental window from 7-16 weeks of introducing her to 3-4 new places every week and 10 new people. I took her camping, I took her to parks, stores that would have her, downtown St. Paul, MN, the aforementioned lake, I took her around different loud noises, the elderly, children, graduation parties, other dogs, the list goes on...

I don't know how much experience you have with puppies or dogs or anything, so sorry if this is way more than you were looking for, but that's been my 9 week journey in a nutshell!

When taking her out in public did you have be careful due to not being covered by all vaccines yet?
The breeder we found seems good. Her girls seem calm and pups are around her grandchildren alot in few month or so. Not sure exactly what questions to ask though.

I did not take her to areas where lots of unknown dogs would go, such as dog parks, petco, etc. Otherwise, no, I did not restrict her due to vaccines. If you wait until their vaccines are done, you have missed the most important developmental stage for socialization. The reward of having a well socialized, stable dog was worth the risk, to me.

Things I looked for in a breeder were first and foremost, health clearances. You can find that on the OFA website, or ask if they are not on there. I wanted a breeder who is working to better the breed, I wanted to see that they have accomplished something with their dogs, my puppy's mother is a GCh show dog and has earned her CGC. Her father is a working service dog for his parapalegic owner. These dogs have proven health and temperment, not just because the breeder said her vet said they are healthy and they seem nice, but because they have earned it.

Yeah breeder we r looking at has a grand champ touring uk atm. And she has done pet therapy in nursing homes with the girls. Which i thought made them good and calm.
