Laufey hass been diagnosed at 8 months with severe hip displasia and we need HELP!

Hello everyone,

Our baby Laufey is 8 months old and has just been diagnosed as having severe hip displasia in both rear legs. The bills are already mounting and I am at a total loss as how to pay these bills. We've had her x-rayed and diagnosed by the orthopedic vet who is going to consult with me and her regular vet on Monday, but he believes she is a candiadte for TPO(Triple Pelvic Osteotomy). The outcome of this surgey is better than total hip replacement which she would have to under go if we don't do this or have her put down, which is not an option. Right now I have to give her medication for anti-inflamatory and pain, plus I have to give her 2 injections a week of Glucosimine. We, my sons and I, love her beyond words and I will do whatever I have to, to help her have a happy and healthy life. This is so unfair, she is so young. That being said a friend recommended I go to the website GIVEITFORWARD.com and post my situation with Laufey. I did and it is a website where people can go to contribute/donate to all kinds of needy cases. Please anything donated for my girl Laufey would be greatly appreciated. I never ask for anything from anyone, but I don't see any other way with such short notice. Please take a look and consider us. Thank you and god bless.

Have you contacted the breeder?

Are you set up on any other fund raising sites?

No, I was going to wait until I finalize the plans with the ortho on Monday before I let them know. The buyers contract states if the dog gets a severe ailment I could replace her with a new pup. Like I would want to do that. I love her as if I birthed her myself. I don't want a replacement. I haven't heard of any other fundraising sites. Please enlighten me.

There are other sites like go fund me. The reason I ask is I was going to donate but the site does not accept pay pal. I don't like giving out my financial information to sites I'm not familiar with unless they take pay pal or amazon payments in which case they never get my personal info.

I totally understand and that's a valid point. I will go to go fund me. Thank you for the information.

However you can do fundraising via paypal directly, I've never done it, but that might be simpler rather than signing up with multiple fundraising sites: PayPal for Personal Fundraising

TMmom,
Sorry you're dealing with all of this, I know it's overwhelming.
I can tell you that HD can often be managed without surgery, & often times without a lot of awful drugs.

I speak from direct experience, my last girl was DX'd with severe HD in both hips at 7 mos. I did lose her to HD in the end---At 13 1/2 years old. She had a good life. Lots of vacations, hiking, swimming, good bed & lots of massages.

I just want to make sure that you are making decisions NOT in a vacuum.

Some vets are better than others--some are revolving doors for making pet owners panic...(VCA comes to mind--again--from direct experience). If the vet is a chain type of vet-do NOT let them high pressure you into procedures-seek outside info.

A few questions:
Were Laufey's x-rays performed while she was FULLY SEDATED?
Is the surgeon board certified?
IS TPO all he has done? How many has he done?
Has he provided references?

Have you gotten a 2nd opinion??? Preferably from a reputable university type of place & not a big $$ making vet chain?

This is something you want to step back, take a breath & do your research on.
Please do not jump too fast, get the 2nd opinion & make sure if you do need surgery that it is from a board certified surgeon.

No one should be pressuring you, & total hip replacement has the best outcome for large & giant breed dogs, at least according to Cornell last I checked.
Sometimes all you need to get is 1 hip done.

Is Laufey currently lame or is she just stiff?

It's time to sharpen your skills at what I call *biggee butt rubs* seriously, daily massages work wonders with HD, make it part of your routine. Start far away & light, I usually start on the rear legs & work my way up slowly. Think about what feels relieving on your legs/buttocks/spine--work both sides gently & then you can do a deeper massage.
Tessa now comes & places her butt on my lap & WAITS for her rubs!!

Hi Catia, I am very stressed and worried for my girl. I went thru this with my GSD, he developed HD at about 10 months and lived to 13. I have a second opinion apt for Tuesday. My vets office is fully licensed and has multiple vets with an Ortho in staff. This is by far the best vet office in the area. They also do all the police dept. dogs in our area. They have my full confidence and I would never follow blindly, I did plenty of research. Now, I first noticed something about a month and a half ago when my mother was visiting. She also saw it and you can tell, it's pretty bad. She struggles to get up, doesn't want to stand long, even the groomer noticed it. I waited hoping it was maybe just a pulled muscle. They were able to get almost perfect x-rays and I saw them, they are very clear and clean, with her awake. Se was beyond compliant for them. They didn't want to sedate her a second time so close together. They are going to have a second ortho sedate her Monday and re-do the x-rays and we are all going to meet and work out a plan. They can only do this surgery if the dog is young enough and there isn't too much joint damage. They will give me her degree of HD on Monday. Everyone at this office is board certified. My vet is certified and owns this practice and the ortho does only and all orthopedic surgery. They did my first Sheltie's broken foot. At about 5 months another dog ran her over and broke four toes. They had to operate and put pins in her baby toes. It was the worst thing I had ever been thru then and now this. But she never even had a limp after the surgery. My girl isn't lame yet, but very close, she is struggling and it is very obvious. My heart hurts for her. Right now I am massaging her often and I have to give her injections twice a week of Glucosamine, plus she is on an anti-inflammatory with a pain killer. If I missed anything or you think of something else I am happy to talk more. I feel like I was just rambling because I worked late today and am just putting my boys down. I also didn't sleep well last night.

I've never purchased a pup from a breeder-

One thing that disturbs me beyond words is the 'replacement' clause in most people's contracts.

As if you can just take your sick dog & trade it in for a new one & all is considered OK. ??? !!!! ***WTF***

I know everything can't be covered in these contracts--but damn--replacement pup--really? How about help paying the medical bills & some EMPATHY?

Do any breeders write in better clauses for things like hip dysplasia & genetic disorders?
Rant over.
