• Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Just seeing what works.

Well, I just tried to download a picture like we used to be able to. Didn't work.

Let's see if the paragraph break works?

Forgot that was in tapa talk. In that app I could not post pictures and I thought I could be wrong.

It wanted me to sign in with a profile but I was already signed in.

Trying to post a pic but I don't seem to be able to resize them easily on my iPad.

What do you mean?
I clicked the image icon. Went select my photo. After selecting photo it brings me back to the dialog box that says upload photo(or something like that) and I get a little red X and it will not allow me to proceed.

I think he is doing much better. Sleeping really hard and being really cute about it. Little turd was doing better before we took him to the vet and helped pay for his wedding this weekend. :( LOL

Thanks for asking. How is Emma adjusting to the new house and how are you adjusting?

We are doing fine. She had a little setback on the 4th, I had medicated her prior to starting the fireworks and she was under the kitchen table in her safe spot so I thought we were ok. When I got back in after the fireworks she was MIA. She came home about 3:30. I was a hot mess until then, wandering around the fields with a flashlight and cookies. I think she escaped and went somewhere to sleep off the drugs. Lesson learned, in the house is not good enough, next year we will sedate earlier since they last so long and put her in her crate with a nice big raw bone. It took her several days to recover fully but she is back to normal now if just a smidge more snuggly!

What kind of medication did you use?

acepromazine, the bottle said to give her 2-3 tabs an hour before the fireworks started so I gave her 2. I had no idea it lasted so long or I would have given it to her earlier. Maybe she would have been more zonked and not felt the need to run. I also had lots of people over so someone didn't realize she needed to stay in the house and let her out. I just never dreamed she would want to go outside when that is where the loud noises are.

I was afraid you were going to say Ace. I was discussing different meds with a lady I trust very much. She's a vet tech with a specialty in behavior and also a certified clicker trainer. She had a strong opinion about using Ace. This is what she said, "Why not ace: It does nothing to mitigate the fear, but stops the animal from physically being able to respond, when they are mentally aware of what's going on. Example: Imagine being given a drug that keeps you from moving away from spiders (snakes, bugs, clowns, whatever) that are crawling all over your body. You know they're there. You know you can't stop them. You just can't do anything about it. This sensitizes animals to the stimulus, and makes it worse over multiple exposures. It's a horrible thing to do to a dog and there is no excuse for a doctor not to know better."

That was strongly worded enough for me to do my own investigating. I already have an ingrained aversion to Ace because it's a big no-no for boxers, so I was inclined to not use it anyway. If you do a search for Ace and phobias, everything seems to support what she said. I'm going to start spreading the word about the use of Ace for thunder and fireworks now. I had no idea that's how it worked.

We ended up going with Alprazolam, 3mg, given about an hour before fireworks were likely to start. I controlled the environment - closed all the windows, put on Through a Dog's Ear and allowed her access to her closet but gated her in just the one room. It went better than I expected. She didn't drool as much, nor did she quake the entire time. She still stayed in her closet but was willing to come out now and again when I went in the room.

Here's just one link.

Oh My God! How could they think that is good!!! Thanks for bring this to my attention. Now I feel even worse. Is it a paralytic? That is like torture! I'll be doing more research and having conversations with my vet to be sure.

Don't kick yourself. If I hadn't already been opposed to Ace for other reasons I would have trusted the vet. The same lady suggested Sileo, but I've heard that it doesn't work as well for our giant breeds as it does for smaller dogs. Of course everyone should do their own research on Ace, but I know I won't be using it. Maybe we should start a different thread.
