Jade & Odi's litter came early

I am not a dog breeder, I will never be a dog breeder, I just don't have the heart for this. I am beat and exhausted and emotionally wounded from this in ways that I don't know if I will fully get over it.

Everything that can go wrong did go wrong.

So I have had a busy week. Jade decided to let the babies out early and she started into Pre-labor Tuesday night 12/09/14 at about 10 pm. I made some calls and they all said too early she is having Braxton Hicks contractions, just ignore it. Well not so Jade was having contractions all night and delivered the first pup a girl (Girl on Fire) at 10:30 Am 12/10/14, the next pup did not come until 11:50, then 12:15 for the next. I saw we were having a trend and called a friend for help. The next pup was at 2:44, another 3:44. We went on like this with 2 more until 7:45 pm thinking we were done at 8 pups now. Jade started eating and acted like she was done but oh no she was just having Whelping Pause (paws? ;) ) Because at around 6 PM she started having violent contractions and could not pass this puppy. I did some fast research and found that crushing tums into a glucose water mix (Warmed water, honey and Karo syrup) then use a syringe to get it into her would kickstart her contractions. This worked to a point but the pup was huge and stuck. I got some KY and went after it with my hand. Took about an hour but I got it. About 10 minutes later a very skinny sickly little guy came out alive. I didn't think he would survive so I made no collar or name for him. I took naps and kept an eye on her all knight and early in the morning I gave her the Tums mix again and sure enough she started having contractions again I found another feet first pup stuck in the birth canal and gave her more Tums mix and made an appointment for the Vets as she was becoming shocky (Ataxia?). I took a fast shower and when I got out there was a dead pup in early decomp stages. I got everyone to the vet and had them do a full check on pups and Jade. She had an infection going on with a temp of 104.3. But the Vet said the calcium (tums) saved her life. He also said in his opinion that any other dog would not have survived this 72 hour ordeal. She is on antibiotics as she had gone toxic from the decomp in her body, but she seems to be recovering quickly.

Sadly we lost the second girl who I had nick named Sunshine Girl because she was such a bubbly ray of hope being delivered 9 hours after the last pup. Jade had rolled over on her and she passed away. This really hurt as she looked just like Jade and I already had a baby crush on her. I cried for an hour over this and have to hold back tears every time I think about her.

I don't have time this minute to post a bunch of photos but I have them posted here in 3 places that I can share for now until I have time to post here.

They are all so cute and squishy... :)

Sorry about the pups that didn't make it; but it looks like Jade is doing well, and the rest look pretty damn healthy; I am sure it must have been stressful for you- have you caught up on sleep yet?

How is Jade doing as a new Mom?

Reading that was a little bit of an emotional roller coaster... I wasn't there for it, but I felt I rolled with it. ... I'm sincerely sorry for the losses, Mike. Very hopeful for those who pull through though.

Thanks all, and Thanks AKB.

The drama continues. Poor Busta Brown is fighting for his life. When he was born he was covered in dead after birth and the cord and bag was wrapped around him. I guess Jade thought he was done or wanted to cull him so she bit him I stopped her and it wasn't full mouth but I just found a wound between his shoulders and he is fading pretty badly. It will be a miracle if he makes it.

My heart and thoughts go out to you and all your babies.

I could NEVER EVER be a breeder, it kills me reading about what you are going thru. Not to mention I wouldn't trust anyone with one of my pups :)

RIP Busta Brown. He lost the fight and went on to be with his sister Sunshine Girl forever.

My husband and I are in tears. Oh, those poor babies...poor sunshine girl and busta brown, gone ahead, but never forgotten. My husband couldn't imagine being able to do what you did...you are a great man. A very great man! You must have been in terror with your precious Jade's life in the balance. My husband looked at his large hands and our little girl and said he could never have done it. I don't know where you found the strength.

You may not feel like it right now...too exhausted and care worn, but you really are the epitome of a loving, caring dog owner. May you all have long, happy lives together. May your grand-pups grow into healthy, happy, well adjusted Boerboels and may they find loving homes with loving people just like you. You Are a Class Act, Mike.

So sorry about your losses, what a terrible blemish on what should otherwise be a joyful event.

Best wishes and lots of kisses to Jade and her litter though, my pack and I will send lots of love and hope to see them grow strong :)

Beautiful pups!

Glad to hear Jade is in good shape - that is the most important thing. Looking forward to hearing about the puppies' progress.
