Is pork extra gassy?

Winter's Cinder

So about 4 days into introducing pork (just pork steak mixed in with chicken) I've noticed cinder looks a little bloated in the tummy area after she eats... ive kept an extra careful eye on her to make sure it doesn't turn to the dreaded bloat.
She sleeps more after she eats the pork, and doesn't seem to be as energetic. After a couple of hours she is back to her old self and her tummy returns to normal. She hasn't shown signs of vomiting, or an extra large tummy .. and even though her tummy is a little bigger its not hard....and im careful about how much water she gets when she is eating and to make sure she doesn't get too rambunctious before and after eating...
Do you think it's just the pork making her a little extra gassy from the transition? Should I keep going with the transition or go back to solely chicken for a few days?
Her stools and potty seem to be normal. She is 11 Weeks and the extra sleeping could be a growth spurt. She doesn't seem to be burping or passing any extra gas... just a little bigger tummy.
Any advice?

First thing I would do is check for worms. All puppies have worms. Yes, I think that pork can make them a little more gassy. If you are not already I would mix the pork with chicken. As for bloat it is rare in puppies but can happen. So, you are good to keep an eye out. Most of us keep Gas-x on hand. If you suspect bloat, get one in her. Check with your vet but I've had 3 vets tell me it is very safe to give. Gas-X is not in place of vet care but to hopefully buy you some time to get to the vet.

She had a round of wormer on the 8th at her last vet visit which would be a little over a week ago... but i will make sure to check extra hard for worms...
I gave her 2-2.5 lbs of chicken her first week, 3 lbs of chicken her second week...and on wed I started the transition and was mixing in 1 lb pork steak with 2 lbs chicken... yesterday (friday)was the first day I mixed it 2 lbs pork with 1 lb chicken...
I will make sure to grab some gas x the next time I'm at the store!!!

Yes, my dogs don't do well with too much pork. Cooked pork is the worst for them. It makes them fart all night long!!

We can't do pork for any of our's either. Yes lots of extra gas (as if there isn't enough of that already) and even loose poops.

Ok... I have the one bowl left today of the chicken mixed with pork... I think I will use it up... I think after today I will still give her pork but on a much more limited basis...

I would definitely try to work it in. It is usually the cheapest red meat you can get. I really really really believe you have to work in as much red meat as you can.

I will definitely keep trying... I think part of my problem is I'm feeding her too much... I upped her amount per day a whole lb because her ribs were showing pretty good and over the last week she has really filled out... so im going to lower her amount a half pound to even her out...
I know her ribs are supposed to show, but she just seemed a little too lean... I also know this will be process of adjustment because she is a growing pup!!
I did give her less for breakfast this morning and her tummy wasn't as bloated looking... it made me feel better when you said bloat wasn't common in puppies (even though I can happen on rare occasions) so it eased my nerves a bit... I will continue to keep an eye on her and keep adjusting her intake!!!

Do you know what wormer you were given? You said she was given one treatment. One of the more common wormers is Strongid. It is a two treatment dose. You dose then 2 weeks later you dose again. Honestly, it is not life and death but can cause the bloaty look.

I will call the vet tomorrow and ask... she got a wormer at her first vet visit (Dec 18) and then again a week ago...
Im pretty sure now looking back over the day today... I was just feeding her too much... I scaled it back to 2 1/4 lbs from 3 lbs... I also gave her a little bit of beef liver with her lunch... (1/3 of her weekly allotment just to see if she'd eat it) ... I just mixed it in and she picked it out first to eat!!

Well I saw all the trouble some have with getting their dog to eat it raw... and I had some thawing out in the fridge so I could portion it out... since I was trying to finish all the other portioning with the chicken backs, whole chicken, and pork steaks I got on friday so I could have my fridge back... I decided if I was gonna prep it... I might as well figure out of she was gonna eat it, or if I was gonna have to cook/flash it before she would touch it...
I realize I have been VERY lucky with the whole process... I truly believe she was meant for raw... the first couple days we had her she didn't really want to eat... I made sure to get the same kibble the breeder used, and I knew there was an adjustment phase coming into our home ... when she did eat, it was slow and it seemed she was having trouble with how hard the kibble was (just puppy chow) ... so i started to research other kibble and foods because I had already read about mastiffs needing better food for their overall health...
She did get over the adjustment phase and was eating fairly well... but i had already made the decision we were gonna try the raw... not only was it better for her... but it would be so much cheaper on our finances!! We live in nowheresville iowa... and even though we could have things shipped to us... raw foods are certainly in way more abundance here... the local meat counter guy already knows me pretty well (like, when he sees me coming down the aisle he knows he's gonna be running into the cooler a lot because I buy in cases, knows me well) we have 2 upright freezers and a second fridge in the garage, and my hubby has gotten used to coming home and finding I've hit some sale and im in the kitchen surrounded by meat, knives, and bags breaking up my latest haul to restock a freezer...

The very first time we moved I thought he was gonna kill me because he didn't understand why I had soooo much kitchen and canning stuff... that Winter when our lonely one freezer ( back then) was jam packed with beef and veggies and i came home after hitting a 59 cents a lb sale on whole chicken with a couple CASES... he found out very quickly that even though it was 10 below outside I wasnt gonna let a little cold stop me... and I smoked (in the garage) and canned the next 3 days ... we were so low on money those days and he had been living off peanut butter sandwiches for his work lunch... I sent him with a jar of chicken soup and told him just to heat it in the microwave at work.. he was DELIGHTED!! And after breaking down the cost of how much that jar cost to make... he all but apologized about giving me so much grief about all the kitchen stuff he moved!! LOL...

He was a little skeptical when I mentioned the raw diet and it being cheaper, but I argued so hard for our fur baby and the benefits to her... he finally said ... just go for it because I can see you're gonna do it anyway!! LOL!! and even though we are just 3 weeks in... he has even commented on the change he has seen in her.

Thanks for the smile, we also have 2 upright freezers and a refrigerator freezer the garage! One is only for veggies grown in our garden, one for dogs meals (the door gets the human meat) and the fridge for thawing, ok and a little beer.

Check with your local county extension office, or livestock yard (sale barn) for the names of local mobile butchers. They can be a great source of organ meats, tripe, trachea and other goodies at no or low cost. We're in "nowheresville WA" and they are some of my best sources. With all the hunting in IA you also might ask around for anyone cleaning out their freezer before the next season rolls around. I came back from SD last summer with 3 coolers loaded full of venison, pheasant, duck and goose that my family was all too happy to clean out.

We recently moved a few months ago to a different section of nowheresville iowa... so im still learning where all the sale barns and butchers are..... my hubby hunts (although he sometimes isn't very good at it...LOL..) but since we moved he hasn't really found a new group to go out with... we are only 3 hrs from our previous home so I will make sure when we head back that way... our friends keep us in mind if they are cleaning out freezers!!
Our kids are in 4h so I know exactly when the ext office and where to start asking!!
I can handle organs... but i really need to research the tripe and trachea.... I may wait for the tripe for it to be warmer outside... as I'm not sure how well it would go over if everyone gets home from work and school to find my son and I with cloths pins on our noses ... him watching Disney Channel and i cutting up some awful stink strip in the kitchen as they are hit with that wall of stink!! Lmao!!!

It does have a unique smell! First time I did the fresh tripe from a steer we had custom butchered our 21 year old son wanted to help. Mr. Macho Tough Guy lost his lunch! Warmer weather might be a good idea.

Our eldest son and his family are in Mason City. He goes hunting with a group from work (although not very successfully.) What part of nowhereseville IA are you in?
