Introducing Shadow

Its going to depend.

Right now he IS in good health. The vet was otherwise impressed with his physical condition. It is entirely possible he can live a long and happy life with no problem. UNFORTUNETLY if he ever DOES get sick, he has the potential to get REALLY sick.

From what I can find FIV is NOT highly contagious. The most common vectors are mother to kitten, and from bites during a fight. Though its recommended to feed positive cats seperately from negative ones to reduce the saliva contact risk.

SO, if Trouble and Shadow get along ok, its still possible he'll be fine in this household. Thats going to have to be a judgment call on our part.....

I am so sorry that you are in this situation. Thank god you have kept them separated!! I had a cat that I adopted last year that got all 3 of my cats sick and ended up costing me almost a 1000 to get them cleared up.

How long till you get the results back from the vet?

I'm sorry about this news, but I have to say he has come into the right hands. I know that you will do what's best for everyone and make sure that he has the best of care.

I'm sending FIV Negative/Healthy vibes your way.

Its potentially VERY serious for him. Its basically the feline version of HIV, and yes, there's a feline version of AIDS too which the FIV can turn into. So potentially, if he got sick, he could end up REALLY sick.....

On the other hand everything I'm reading, and after talking with several owners of these cats, its NOT highly contagious. The BIG vector is a bite deep enough to penetrate the blood stream. There MAY be a slight chance of a vector from a large amount of saliva, but it doesn't actually appear to be very large. Heck, kittens born to an FIV positive queen have a less than 50% chance of being FIV positive themselves! So as long as we're very carefull about intros, and he and Trouble get along well enough there's no fighting, the risk to Trouble appears to be minimal.

And there's still a possibility that the final bloodwork will come back negetive......

So everyone cross your fingers for me!

Yeah, I've heard of it but I never had first hand experience other than vets recommended the cat be separated from others. Charlie is my first cat and I'm still nervous about him lol!

Fingers crossed everything comes back negative.

Ruth what is the verdict on your new baby? Test results? I lost a very sweet stray kitty many years ago to this disease & it was very ugly at the end. I'm hoping you don't have to deal with this disease.

With the baby gate between them he and Trouble are fine. Face to face he thinks she's a bit pushy and isn't afraid to tell her so. Which isn't unusual or unexpected (theres a reason her name is Trouble lol). So far so good, to the point where if he's negetive I'll allow him free run of the cat areas of the house and let nature take its course. If he's positive I'll have to take it a bit slower just to be safe.

I love my vets office. I gripe on occasion, but I love them......

Today is the 2nd day I called in to see if Shadows bloodwork was in. Got the same receptionist both times, and they ALL know me (admittedly as Apollo's owner, but they remember me).

Today the vet said she'd call the lab to see if they had anything, but pointed out that it WAS 4pm on a Friday......sure enough no answer.

5pm the vets office officially closed for the day (theres someone there 24/7/365 cause they run theirown emergency service).

5:45pm I got a phone call from the receptionist. The lab had just faxed over Shadows results, to her eye it reads negetive, but the vet will call me with the official results (I'm not worried, its a yes or no sort of thing, but they'll want to retest in 6months). I coulda hugged her!
