Information request regarding cc diet

Hi everyone. I have read a lot about diet and problems with mastiff health particularly skin and ear difficulties. Do cc typically suffer these problems? I am trying to learn and plan as much for the new puppy coming shortly and what to know what should do for diet to avoid any issues where possible. Raw diet is likely not practical for my home so any recommendations of brand is most appreciated along with any other help.

Bummer that you didn't get any replies... I was hoping to hear some experienced mastiff people chime in here...

The skin and ear issues may be related to allergies - I have heard (on this forum) that many mastiffs are allergic to chicken, which is any just about every kibble and can of food you can buy.

Our EM puppy had itchy skin and one gunky ear (the other was perfectly clean). She was eating Solid Gold Wolf Pup, which is bison and rice based, so no "known" chicken on the ingredient list. Once we got her on a raw diet things got better, but still the occasional itchy skin... once we got consistent with adding a salmon oil pill every day and stopped chicken all together, the itchies went away. Her "gunky" ear is nearly as clean as the good one now - after 2.5 months on raw. She's just over 8 months old now.

If you're looking for food recommendations, check out posts by Smart_Family. The Wolf Pup isn't on her list, but we did well on it.

Thanks DennasMom. I had hoped for more discussion here specific to what everyone is feeding CC. Particularly looking for Some direction for first year.

We switched all our dogs over to grain free dog food which has helped with allergies. You can get one that is all life stages.

Thanks Barb! What brand do you use I am trying to plan and any suggestions of what other CC are eating that seems to be agreeable would be greatly appreciated.

Our CC eats raw, mostly chicken, pork and organ meats with some salmon oil. He does quite well on it.

Our 4mo CC had digestive problems since we got him until we switched him to a grain-free all fish protein kibble. We are currently feeding him Natural Balance Alpha

I had my girl on Earthborn Holistic - Meadow Feast. She did well on it, but I have switched her to raw and she LOVES it. Earthborn is a good quality kibble that is grain free.

Ive tried several different kinds of food for my CC. Not sure if you have petco in Canada but after being recomended this grain free food from natural balance, I will never go to anything else. The improvements I saw just in two weeks with my dogs coat and her porportional growth was amazing! Before I switched to this food her hind-quarters was growing faster than her front-quarter if you understand.... So in my opinion, you should try Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish Formula. This particular food is high in the fatty omega 3 acids like found in fish oil. Very good for the joints! I haven't had any issues with her coat or ears since she started on this food and currently she has been eating it for about 5 months. Also, if you haven't found the site yet, go to dogfoodadvisor.com and you can find anything and everything about different kinds of foods out there. Hope this helps, have a good day!
